That guy wouldn’t know the good stuff if somebody smashed him over the head with a bottle of it.

I don't know why, but I actually clicked your link and read it! I particularly liked this line:

And just how do you know he didn’t go to self checkout? How about we wait for all the video to come out.

If we had real journalism in this country Cooter the Looter would have been found and interviewed 13 years ago.

I’ve known for years who he was.

His name was Slim. He was a street musician in the Quarter. Don’t know where he’s at now, or if he’s even still alive.

He was around for a while after Katrina, so he survived that. He used to hang around The Alibi a lot.

Tell us more about him. That image fascinates me for some reason — maybe it is because he looks so peaceful and happy.

Perhaps I am making a distinction that is no doubt legally suspect — looting is looting — but it seems “liberating” some alcohol from a liquor store that is 3 feet underwater and has been abandoned and snatching some booze from an otherwise intact business during a riot are two different moral matters.

In any event, why is he nicknamed “Cooter” and what type of alcohol is that: Heineken or booze? Someone has created a FB page for him so he obviously gained some level of notoriety as an internet meme:

Cooter Looter

I don’t know where the “Cooter” thing came from. I know that he gained global fame (notoriety?) from that now-iconic photo as “Lootie”, and I’m not really sure he was ever even aware of it. He didn’t seem to be when I knew him (which was only tangentially). He may have thought it better to keep a low profile.

Like I say, he played acoustic guitar on the sidewalks of the Quarter before and immediately after Katrina, and frequented all the bars (especially The Alibi). I don’t even know his real name, only that he went by “Slim”.

It is amazing how such an image can spread on the internet. Andy Warhol was correct. As we saw in the recent Central Park incident — he may have been better off being being relatively unknown and ignorant of his status as an internet meme.

Booze and baby formula have something in common. They're locked up.
