One is a Senate rule, the other is the constitutionally codified system of selecting the President.

absolutely the same

hat would campaigns look like without the EC? Any Americans know how to run one? Do you just hit major cities and let media coverage carry your message?

No more worrying about "flipping" this County or that. Would there still be battleground states?

It would completely negate rural votes. The big cities would determine who our President would be.

And I would be OK with it if and only if there were strict voter id laws in every state.

The electoral college is enshrined in the constitution.

It takes 2/3 of the states to change the constitution.

The electoral college gives 1/2 the states more political clout.

Simple math: 1/2 < 2/3.

Whip that dead horse again.

It really is just that fricking simple. Changing it will never happen. Let it go... Work a hell of alot harder in the battleground states if you want a different outcome in the presidential election.

because we are a republic of states. The states are actually electing the president based on delegates. Plain democracies always collapse, the founders were wise to set it up this way

This thread is the reason you should have to pass the citizenship test to be able to vote, regardless of where you were born

Trump represents a larger cross section of America. Keep the electoral college.

It will require a constitutional amendment, which will not pass anytime within the foreseeable future.

I'm really not in favor of it. Our system is a representative republic, not a democracy.

Of course they want it abolished.

Their immigration policies have worked the last 40 years.

They control both Coasts...that's where the people are.

Once the electoral college is abolished, every election will be won from people who have spent less than 20 years in this country.

Outdated democracy. Outdated Constitution. I wonder what their vision of a newly updated democracy and Constitution is? Actually I don't need to wonder, all I need to do is open my eyes and see.

Doesn't matter, the EC will never be replaced. The very states that would lose their power in the Presidential election by doing away with the EC would have to agree to get rid of the EC, and that's not happening.

Huh? A republic has nothing to do with an electoral college. A republic is simply electing persons to represent the citizens

Not having an EC is not a Democracy. I think everyone needs to go back to Civics class. A democracy is where the people vote the laws directly. A Republic (or representative Republic, it is the same thing!) is where the people elect officials to offices and positions to take care of the laws for them. EC is not in the definition of a Republic

The electoral college is the glue that holds this country together. Get rid of it and the country as we know it will cease to exist. People calling for the end of it are ignorant beyond belief. Let california and new york dictate policy for a few elections and you'll see how fast states in the middle start banding together to form their own unions.

Why let a few people who live in the middle of nowhere and have no clue how the rest of the world works dictate who is in the WH. Technology and keeping up with the rest of the World economically and militarily depends on the densely populated areas. That is where most of the tax money comes from, innovation, medical advances, tech, etc come from.
