After Trumps barrage of tweets Friday regarding a change of majority vote and the heat he got on this board on the matter how is that Democrats can still openly call for an end to the electoral college and not receive the same backlash?

At Politicon today in a few hours there is actually a panel discussion titled
"OUTDATED DEMOCRACY PRESENTS THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE – AN OBSTACLE TO DEMOCRACY?"
-"Why are we the only democracy to use a delegate system to elect our national executive? This expert panel of electoral reformers will discuss the undemocratic nature of a system that allows the candidate with fewer popular votes to take the White House."
Politicon

As I recall after the election many individuals were calling for a change to the system or advocating the possibility of new systems.

Here are articles from PBS,CBS, MSNBC to refresh your memory if you forgot (a whole more if you Google)

MSNBC

FWIW I completely disagree with Trump it needs to stay at 60 votes, however I am concerned that one party has a growing faction of people that want to abolish the electoral college. Why the double standard on this board and around the country? I don't see any Democrats calling out their peers...

Most of the reaction from Democrats on this board has been "go for it"

Ok end it the way it is for 48 of the states winner take all and make it like Maine and Nebraska with the split vote with the congressional districts...had it been that way Obama would not have been re-elected...

They want it abolished when they lose an election, and it works as it should when they win an election. More crybaby bullshite Washington cucks, Republican party is full of them also. I say keep it to piss off everybody.

Also dumocrats want it abolished because they most likely will win on popular vote because of California.

Obama called Bush unpatriotic for doubling the debt in 8 years...I guess since Obama more than doubled it in 8 years also that make him unpatriotic too...

I'm not going to defend everything Trump said in the past. He made & continues to make ridiculous statements.

I'm more concerned about the double standard that exists within one party not calling out their own. Is that something we can have an honest discussion about?

This makes me nervous. The founders built several counter majoritarian planks in the constitution, and the EC is an important one. The big issue we face is that our education system sucks and people no longer understand why things came to be in the manner that they did. Instead we just emote, and ride the prevailing emotion of the day.

The electoral college and the Senate filibuster have absolutely nothing in common other than they are rules concerning our government.

I'm daily amazed about the absolute lack of critical thinking skills in this country. I see an idiot like Maxine Waters and wonder how the hell she can continually be elected to Congress, then I remember how stupid the average American is.

Not to mention that the filibuster is a Senate rule that can be fairly easily changed, the electoral college is you know part of the Constitution and thus not so easy to change.

They both seem to be checks on simple majoritiarianism

Not wrong, just flawed. There will always be whiners when somebody loses. It doesn't make their ideas valid, just more ridiculous.

At this point I would be for MORE restrictions on voting. Something along the lines of "if you pay no taxes you are not allowed to cast a vote". #PanemEtCircenses

Except the electoral college was created so that we DO elect President by simple majority. A simple majority of electoral votes. Whereas, the Senate, until now has never allowed a simple majority to rule.

A valid argument could be made if the electoral college requires 60% of electoral votes to win election, and some wanted to change that to 50.1% , but it's already a simple majority vote.

They are two entirely different concepts.

What would campaigns look like without the EC? Any Americans know how to run one? Do you just hit major cities and let media coverage carry your message?

No more worrying about "flipping" this County or that. Would there still be battleground states?
