Check your history! Geography as well: Cuba is just 90 miles off the US coast. Remember WHY the embargo went into effect to begin with?!?!

Bad idea! Nothing will change for the average Cuban who will still have to struggle to make ends meet. Any and all economic gains will end up, as always, in the pockets of the ruling elite. And Cuba will continue to be communist!

You know, I really like John Perkins as an author as well... but maybe another point of view may be beneficial to get a better overall picture of the global landscape?

I hope Stew is right. Communism stinks, even more so when it's only 90 miles away. I do think it would have been better to allow the embargo, or what remained of it, to stay in place and let things take their natural course.

Old Cubans cared about the embargo and voted Republican. Young Cubans, have assimilated, don't really care about the embargo and now the Cuban vote is pretty much split like the rest of the country 50/50 Rep/Dem.

About time.

And by any measure how can it not be better for the average citizen of Cuba?

The Embargo allowed the government to deepen its control and foster and US v Them atmosphere. It created an unnatural course and has allowed the Cuban authoritarian regime to remain in power longer than all of there former comrades. Now the "natural course" has a chance to happen. Do some reading...free trade kills authoritarians.

So you think maintaining an artificial control on free trade is the "natural course" of things?

I do a lot of reading. And I still have family in Eastern Europe. Where nothing has really changed! Not for the average Joe. Those are my real sources!

Has nothing to offer America in the way of trade.

Sorry, but being geographically located out there with little natural resources does your ppl no good.

Cuba has a ton to offer in the way of tourism, and they are close.

Make no mistake, this thing had nothing to do with anything other than raw politics.

Jeb announces. Obama raises an issue pitting various regions against JEB's Miami donors. Simultaneously in the process BHO seeks credit for freeing a prominent Jewish man who'd been held by the Cubans. Ensures political effect in Fla is somewhat balanced.

This! I know several developers who are chomping at the bit to develop Cuban beaches into the next hot tourist destination for states. People here and there have a huge opportunity.

This. We should just go ahead and make them a state or territory. Both sides would profit.

ETA: Of course we would have to move Gitmo in a hurry!
