Credit to a Democratic President.

Today, in 1945, America dropped the second atomic bomb on Nagasaki. Tens of thousands of innocents were killed, but millions of Japanese, Americans, and other innocents lived because an American President had the courage to do a hard thing.

To President Truman and his big brass Missouri balls!

Edited to protect the stupidity of me.

the left would never make a thread like this. and if they did it on a poplar leftist forum, it'd be deleted and OP banned.

I'd say it was one of the most difficult political/military decision of all time.

If you look at it objectively it (IMO) was an easy decision; saved millions of lives and $$$$$.

In a vacuum, sure. That's why I included political in it, he had to account for international and domestic political impacts. Not to mention the moral dilemma he himself would feel making that lone decision.

I stand corrected and embarrassed by a 1st grade math mistake.

Making such a mistake in public is embarrassing, but fortunately I didn’t do it in front of the wife! That would have been tragic!

It was the only way to stop those relentless bastards. Now can we stop apologizing and playing the reparations game for it?

Can you imagine the melting if this happened today with all of the social media?

I'm sure it weighed heavily on him but I'm pretty sure he always knew it was the correct decision.

This is the easiest argument to win.

Those arguing against dropping the bombs are all incredibly ignorant of history and the Japanese mindset of that time.

The only other option would have been Operation Downfall, which would have made the body count from the two A-bombs look like child's play.

. In “Mandate for Change,” Eisenhower’s autobiography, Ike related this exchange: “I voiced to him my grave misgivings, first on the basis of my belief that Japan was already defeated and that dropping the bomb was completely unnecessary, and secondly because I thought that our country should avoid shocking world opinion by the use of a weapon whose employment was, I thought, no longer mandatory as a measure to save American lives. It was my belief that Japan was, at that very moment, seeking some way to surrender with a minimum loss of ‘face.’”

“We didn't need to do it, and we knew we didn't need to do it, and they knew that we didn't need to do it, we used them as an experiment for two atomic bombs.” That’s Brig. Gen. Carter Clarke, quoted in “The Decision to Use the Atomic Bomb,” by Gar Alperovitz.

quote:

“The Japanese had, in fact, already sued for peace. The atomic bomb played no decisive part from a purely military point of view in the defeat of Japan. The use of atomic bombs at Hiroshima and Nagasaki was of no material assistance in our war against Japan. The Japanese were already defeated and ready to surrender.” - - Fleet Adm. Chester W. Nimitz, commander in chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet.

quote:

--“Certainly, prior to 31 December 1945, and in all probability, prior to 1 November 1945, Japan would have surrendered even if atomic bombs had not been dropped.” -- Adm. William D. Leahy, chief of staff to President Truman, in the U.S. Strategic Bombing Survey.

--“The war would have been over in two weeks without the Russians entering and without the atomic bomb. The atomic bomb had nothing to do with the end of the war at all.” --Maj. Gen. Curtis LeMay.

I can't imagine the awe and fear people felt at that time seeing something so powerful being used.

I don't think we realized truly what we did until after we did it
