the Democrats were not the "left" at the time. In 1860 the Republicans won their first election. They were the liberals that had abolition as a main platform plank. That's why the Southern states seceded before Lincoln was ever even president, the liberals had won. The writing was on the wall.

Only if you define liberal as the popular right/GOP has defined it from say, 1960 or so onwards, maybe even before.
I'm talking liberal in the social and economic sense, not the idea that Reagan, for all he got correct, used to define is non "conservative" political opposition.
The reality is that both the moderate left and right are both "liberal" in that they believe in the constitution and the idea of individual God given rights.
Some are more "liberal" in their idea of government and an others are mor "conservative." Both are types of liberal in regards to governance the the rule of law.

One side of true conservative philosophy has a history of success especially economic success. Capitalism has lifted billions out of poverty and given a better quality of life to so many. The liberal philosophy saw tens of millions(if not hundreds of millions) the victims of socialism just in the 20th century. That’s quite an economic philosophy where you have a hand in murdering your own citizens into the tens of millions.
