CNN hired McCabe because trump tweeted out against McCabe a few times. And McCabe is extremely anti-trump. So hiring McCabe was CNN's way to thumbing their nose at trump. Nothing more, nothing less.

Hiring McCabe is a way for McCabe to publicly defend himself and CNN to paint him as a victim of the Trump administration while he faces likely a long and tedious prosecution and continue to make Trump look like the bad guy.
