It may be crass and vulgar but how exactly is it “homophobic” to suggest a referee is a whore on the take?
This is how you build a strawman.

Mexico historically did it when the opposing keeper had a free kick into play. When they ramped that up, the ref ended it.
This policy isn't new. It's been a target of FIFA/CONCACAF since at least 2018

I was reading some Mexican soccer threads on Reddit this morning and the melt is amazing (although not targeted at the US as much as the Mexican Federation for either "only caring about money" or "trying to promote Liga MX").
Then I read them crying about "racism" online after the game and I LOL'd so hard.
As a summary for non-soccer fans. Mexico is one of the trashiest fanbases in all of soccer and basically everyone hates them (especially other Latino/Hispanic national teams). Mexico thinks they are right below historic teams like Brazil and Argentina and miles above anyone else in the Hemisphere.
So when you hear USNT fans talk about Mexicans, it has literally nothing to do with their race/ethnicity and everything to do with their nationality. Every other Central and South American national team hates Mexico the same.

A) It wasn't directed at the ref, it's directed at the goalie whenever he sends a goal kick.
B) It was happening the entire game but the ref was apparently deaf to it until the game was 3-0 and out of reach.
C) It more means f*got
D) the referee lost total control of this match and cost the US two starters for the finals vs Canada.

This is why they ended the match. They were getting their arses handed to them. If they were up 3-0, there’s no way that match stops.

But may be dependent on nation. Just like "pendejo" is way worse for Mexicans than for others who use it like "dummy".
Pinche is another one. In Spain it just means chef's assistant. There are restaurants in Spain called El Pinche, and tourists from Latin America laugh like Beavis and Butt-Head when they see it.

To be fair they were in extra time and the US was kicking the dogshit out of Mexico. Both sides had two guys kicked out already and the ref had completely lost control of the match.

That is but one of the many meanings of “puto.” In the context of perceived unfair calls amid a flurry of red cards, fans lambasting a referee as being a rented whore or taunting an opposing player as a being a little bitch makes perfect sense.

Once again, accusing others of your own transgressions! You are — in a non-homophobic sense — such a pequeño puto!

From my experience "Pinche" in a negative way is mostly used by Mexicans. They tend to use it to strengthen on the real "name/word", and any real meaning has really has disappeared.
Ive asked a South American buddy of mine about it once and he said he's never heard anyone in his family ever use it in a negative way like Mexican do.
My understanding is the Mexican Spanish is considered to be a very ugly/harsh kind of Spanish. Argentinian and Colombian from Bogota are considered the prettiest. Some others sound cleaner if the people are from the more educated class. Pretty interesting to learn the differences between them all and try to compare it to how different regions/states are here.

We gringos shouldn't try to be definitive in what slang words means what in Spanish based on our own experiences. Makes people look stupid thinking that every country south of the border is the same.

From the people that brought you Latinx comes "you Mexicans are homophobic!".

I don't watch as much soccer as I used to but has "Puto" ever not been chanted at a Mexican soccer match?

Take it up with an actdual Mexican
quote:
Mexican national team fans join in unison to shout a Spanish-language homophobic slur ("p***," which roughly translates to "gay prostitute")
quote:
"It's not the intention with which you shout or with which you chant. It's how the other [people] receive it," then Mexican federation president Yon de Luisa told media in 2021. "If anybody feels it's a discriminatory act, then it is not something that we should include in a conversation. That is no longer a debate. If it is discriminatory, we should avoid it."

A number of Colombian accents are considered neutral I.e. easy to understand. Opinions are hardly ever unanimous but those accents are generally considered pretty.
Argentinian Spanish accents are as far from neutral accent as you can get. To a lot of Latin America they sound off. Are they pretty? Opinions will wildly vary.
