Now that the number of new people infected with the coronavirus in China is slowing down, the country's Communist Party is ratcheting up threats against the West, with a particularly nasty warning about access to life-saving drugs aimed at the United States.
In an article in Xinhua, the state-run media agency that's largely considered the mouthpiece of the party, Beijing bragged about its handling of COVID-19, a virus that originated in the city of Wuhan and has spread quickly around the world, killing nearly 5,000 people and infecting thousands more. The article also claimed that China could impose pharmaceutical export controls which would plunge America into "the mighty sea of coronavirus."
quote:
The disturbing threats made during a global pandemic as well as the scary consequences if that threat becomes real highlight just how tight China's grip is on the global supply chain. Already, the Food and Drug Administration has announced the first drug shortage related to the coronavirus. Though it did not disclose which drug was in short supply, the FDA did say it could not access enough raw components needed because they are made in China.
quote:
Though the United States is a global leader in research, much of the manufacturing of life-saving drugs has moved overseas. The last American manufacturing plant to make a key component in penicillin shuttered in 2004. Since then, Chinese pharmaceuticals companies have moved in and taken over, supplying between 80 percent and 90 percent of U.S. antibiotics, 70 percent of acetaminophen and about 40 percent of heparin, according to Yanzhong Huang, a senior fellow for global health at the Council on Foreign Relations.

That would be an act of war.

Some might call that an act of war

Act of war. Time to liberate Taiwan and destroy some man-made reefs.

How about a nuclear bomb on each of their 4000 largest cities
Would be a good start

Exactly why we need to manufacture our own drugs.
Posted on 3/13/20 at 5:37 pm to Contra
This is why we need to pull ALL manufacturing from China. ALL of it.

Go ahead, China. Do it. Seriously, try that shite. It will end them without a single shot fired.

That simple threat just guaranteed decoupling.
Done deal.
Done deal.

Yep, that would be the best thing they could do for the US right now

Good. When this blows over, that will be Exhibit A in a global reshuffling of manufacturing. I’m to the point where I don’t even mind the government subsidizing important industries to stay here.

Billions for defense.
Not a penny for tribute.

If they feel froggy, then jump. We can end their economy and system of government in six months if forced to do so.

Any doubt Trump has been on point all along is completely gone if one has a brain.

I’m to the point where I demand it. We cannot be reliant on overseas production of critical products like medicine, medical equipment, etc going forward.

We can surely bring a lot of it here while helping our good buddies south of the border with a cut of the action as well. They really don't want this. How about all of that national debt? Would hate to see the US waive off all of it connected to China as a consequence.

Blame the gutless Americans who gave them the power to do this.
fricking pathetic a country as robust as America has to rely on a shitty 3rd world country

Sounds like we might want to have permanent tariffs on critical materials (such as drugs) once this hubbub is over...
