But posters that have no problem with the new translation are saying they agree, because God wouldn't lead you into temptation. Which is clearly wrong. And yet facilitated in their thinking by a supposed pope

Well, I have no problem with it simply because it is a statistical certainty that NEITHER translation gets it exactly right.

Acknowledging that you'll sin in the future isn't some theological concept exclusive to Catholics

Yes.

But planning to sin overtly, because, "well Jesus" is kind of a Catholic thing.

"Oh, I know I'm about to do shitty stuff but that's OK because I have Jesus!!!!"

Knowing you can't help but sin in the future and PLANNING to do it because it's no biggie "because Jesus" are two entirely different things.

He wasn't "tempting" Eve

He was just "testing" her.

I hear you.

But look,

of all the crap this Pope has done that I have an issue with, this is near the bottom.

Agreed.

Shouldn't make the top 100.

By definition, the last translation wasn't exactly correct. Getting mad that the prior not exactly correct version has been modified into a new not exactly correct version is..........meh

Right, the long standing translation is fine too.

'Lead us not' can be read as
'lead us away from' or
'help protect us', or
'throw me a frikin bone here', etc., etc., etc.

I don't care for the Pope.

But the premise of this thread is ignorant.

The original version of the Lord's Prayer was spoken in ancient Aramaic.

In Old Aramaic, the Lords Prayer section of "and lead us not into temptation" is the sixth of seven petitions. The sixth request in essentially not to be brought to a place where temptation might overwhelm us.

Because it is not wrong to be tempted or tested (Jesus absolutely was). It is wrong to give in to temptation (as Jesus didn't)

The prayer by Jesus was to tell his followers to ask the creator to make their choices easier, by not directing their path into a place of great temptation (as he had experienced himself from Satan). It does not mean anything AT ALL as to what the pope is now declaring, that God will not tempt you in any way, ever!

False theology. Keep your distance from this pope

Their translation was "lead us not into temptation", which would include not placing the tree there, or not allowing the snake to communicate, or not creating Eve, etc.

All things placed in their path by God, not the snake

I don't give a frick what the pope thinks. What does the text say?

Do you believe that 2000 years ago somebody wrote down the Lord's Prayer in modern English?

Why is it so hard for people to understand this isn't the first time it has been translated and re-translated?

Spoiler alert.

IMV, it is immensely arguable that God is NOT "good".

Alas. Another thread.

The current translation isn't 2000 years old.

Honestly, THIS is what I find most interesting about stories like this.

I mean, I begrudge no one their beliefs. I don't know everything.

But for frick's sake, if you're going to have a belief, at least KNOW THE frickING HISTORY of your own belief system!
