My guess for why those in power are trying to accumulate artifacts (or even destroy them) is similar to what communist China did when they took power. They want to erase history so we can't connect to our past. They don't want us to have whatever understanding people in pre-history had gained. They want us stuck in the present, without a connection to the past and the knowledge that those people tried to pass on so we are more malleable for their wishes.
They get to receive the wisdom, but they can't allow it to be passed on to the "commoners" because it might be transformative.

Imagine this shite, a grano-diorite vase that is somehow milled to such a perfection that it can be balanced on a bottom like an egg shell and milled to symmetrical perfection so fine that modern metrologists cannot tell if it's the vase that is in error or their measuring equipment.

So AI decodes something that tells us something. Great. What do you imagine it is going to say? We once had spaceflight and were awesome?
