She's a minor symptom of the right as racist trope. An unfortunate reaction, sometimes, on the right is to take the first black uttering the right ideology and rush them to the forefront. Ms Owens is polished and can clearly state talking points...but there's not much substance...she has no depth of understanding and is easily flummoxed when challenged. She's smart and with some more seasoning (reading) she might be a better public figure.

Right now she's built for the dying TV news format - 5 minutes, repeat talking point over and over. She is a disaster in the new media format - long form discussion. She lacks the chops.

ETA: Not sure I'd call her a grifter though.
