Of course. Just because you have to reconcile some give and take on those stances based on the issue you can still maintain those as core principles.

I'm not sure how the 2 are connected

Often times when this topic comes up, people seem to pare down the social side to pot and gay marriage. Certainly those are two big social issues in today's political climate, but to me social issues is a huge umbrella. It includes welfare, civil rights, etc. And too often I see people that define themselves as socially liberal take a more conservative stance on those other social issues.
It's why I hate political labels. I hate people that contort their beliefs into a political label even more.

government welfare is not a social issue

Only if you avoid wasting/spending money on leftist social programs. If you're socially liberal, and willing to defund Planned Parenthood, then yes, you can. Of course, you'd be a unicorn.

Why wouldn't that be possible? The kind of person you describe would have to have a lot more common sense than most people on either side though. They would need to understand that not *all* government is the root of all evil.

austerity
That's a charged, progressive word - "austerity" implies deprivation. Not spending other people's money on social engineering bullshite is not "austerity."
On the other hand, big government, statist folks (*cough* lots of Republicans *cough*) who fashion themselves "fiscally conservative" are deluding themselves.

Of course it is - every Federal spending project you have to go to "promote the general welfare" to justify is a "social" issue. This is the definition of expensive, "Good Idea Fairies" running amok.

Oh, come on. I guess since it's Monday on the Poliboard we can't use certain words because they're "charged"

OK.

Not spending other people's money on social engineering bull shite is not "austerity"
So "depriving" a program of money is not being "austere" with it?

Well, if it's a Constitutionally charged function, maybe I agree with the word.
If it's nonsense that shouldn't have been funded in the first place, then I consider that good stewardship.
(ETA: Are you going to dust off "draconian cuts" to describe an increase of less than dictated by baseline budgeting? That's always a good one.)

Can you be fiscally conservative and socially liberal
In fact it is a misnomer. By conventional standards: The Con wants gubment out of your Fiscal lives, and deciding what consenting adults can do with their own bodies and lives. On the other hand, liberals are supposed to want government out of your personal lives, but in strict control of all things economic.
Sure the reality of those 2 are different.
However, Libertarians just decide to become consistent. They want the government out of their wallet, and their personal lives.

You can't truly be "constitutionally conservative" and not be fiscally and socially conservative.

I am to a certain point. You lose me on the Soc lib stance; when the tranny's demand special treatment and now people can be IDed as both sexes and animes, fluid freaks--- to get special shite.

No because if you would have read my original post without looking for subliminal liberal propaganda, you would have noticed that I used "austerity" as a simple and accurate description. It wasn't a judgment.
One word is shorter than typing "cutting to the bone or eliminating an unwanted program or programs"
