California’s Ban on Gas Cars Can’t Fail

eThat sound you heard on Wednesday was the roar of 1,000 engines sputtering with the knowledge that the end is nigh. That’s when California announced it would begin phasing in a ban on sales of new gas-powered cars in the state: By 2035, per terms first laid out in a 2020 executive order by Gov. Gavin Newsom, automakers will no longer be allowed to sell cars within state lines unless they’re powered by electric-charge batteries or hydrogen fuel cells (or are plug-in hybrids, in certain instances). Companies will also have to meet benchmarks along the way: By 2026, 35 percent of their sales must consist of zero-emission vehicles, and by 2030, 68 percent. The California Air Resources Board will enforce these standards, with the power to impose fines on carmakers that violate the rule, and to ensure the batteries used in their electric vehicles are long-lasting and recyclable.

It can be said with no hyperbole that this is a game-changer. A former Environmental Protection Agency official told the New York Times that “California will now be the only government in the world that mandates zero-emission vehicles.” (Emphasis mine.) A clean-air expert called the rules a “turning point in cleaning up pollution.” Plus, as California goes, so does the nation: 16 other states already adhere to longtime California policy on reducing carbon emissions from transportation—still the most climate-damaging sector to date—and increasing the use of “clean” and low-emission cars. If they do follow these new rules, about one-third of the nationwide automobile market could be entirely gas-free in 13 years. With Californian cities also forbidding the construction of new gas stations and rolling out more public spaces free of cars, it’s clear the Golden State is leading the way in shaping an American future beyond petroleum-guzzling vehicles. Just in time for the Inflation Reduction Act’s new EV incentives, too.

I'm all for electric cars and solar energy and all but we all can't be "all in" on one thing.

Let's say, hypothetically, the whole world goes to electronic cars this weekend and the infrastructure is global to power cars at "power stations" instead of gas stations. Ok, cool.

Now, how are you going to power America, the world, hell, even just California? COAL BABAYYYY! The thing the far left has belittled for 3 decades.

Under 5% of the cars in US are electric.

The demand for batteries alone will kill this initiative it would seem. Is the world going to increase production on lithium or whatever they use by that much?

Cant wait for gangs and thugs to target customers at electric charging stations. You know your victims wont be going anywhere.

Remind me what country actually controls the vast majority of lithium battery production again?

The big question is IF the California Electric Grid can support the influx of people plugging in their vehicles every night.

Big electric car fanboy, but forcing adoptin through legislation is a disaster waiting to happen. I'd love to buy an electric car right now, but can't afford it. I suppose those who can't buy a new electric car will be forced to buy used ICE cars in the future? And of course, this will cause a huge spike in used car prices. Not to mention that CA's electrical grid cannot keep up with current use.

Morons - more people will leave, hope they don't continue to vote blue in their new found homes.

The race to EVs will destroy the world economy....just watch.....

And will not change the climate, only Mother Nature can do that.

It'll work, but not the way they publicly proclaim. The commi-left's goal of pushing people toward EVs isn't to "save the planet" it's to put a leash on you and restrict your freedom of movement without their permission.

Not reducing carbon emissions. They are being transferred to China and other nations.

I called them. They recycle lead based batteries. However, lead based batteries are not really useful for powering vehicles since they only discharge 50% to 60% of capacity. Lithium batteries can discharge to about 80 to 90% of their nominal capacity.

i fully support

make it 25 years in jail for anyone transporting that evil gasoline or diesel across the state line, treat it like heroin and fentanyl and let them burn.

life flight helicopters - no more of those

fire trucks and emergency vehicles - no more of those

motor homes - no more of those

it will be eutopia or electricity heaven where power plants will be offline 8hrs of every day because they cant supply power to the chargers

i look forward to pictures like this as the new normal in california

Only the beginning.
When it doesn’t curb emissions enough, they’ll ban used car sales too.
Then they’ll ban gas cars in the major cities.
Then they won’t issue license plates to gas cars.
Then they’ll ban gas stations.
Until it eventually becomes a crime to drive one in the state.

I'm a little surprised they aren't just starting there.

The company was created by a former Tesla executive for the express purpose of recycling electric car batteries.
