California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into law Saturday a bill requiring large retailers to provide gender-neutral toy sections, per the Los Angeles Times.

quote:

The Consumer Federation of California supported the law, saying: "Keeping similar items that are traditionally marketed either for girls or for boys separated makes it more difficult for the consumer to compare the products and incorrectly implies that their use by one gender is inappropriate," the Sacramento Bee reports.

quote:

The law states that retail stores with 500 or more workers must sell toys and child care products (excluding clothes) in a gender-neutral section that's "labeled at the discretion of the retailer ... regardless of whether they have been traditionally marketed for either girls or for boys."

Retailers can continue to offer other toys and child care goods that are traditionally marketed specifically toward girls or boys.

Companies that fail to comply with the new law could face a civil penalty of $250 for a first violation and $500 for any subsequent violations.

Well thanks to his retarded policies all the toys should fit on one aisle for the next 8 months at least.

Making the world a better place for us all, one piece of legislation at a time. Glad someone is finally tackling the really hard issues.

Will they have a section in clothing dedicated to those that claim "It's ma'am"?

My previous company chose to license our product rather than deal with manufacturing in California or dealing with any of the BS. I wish more companies would just say frick California. If you want this product, you'll need to drive to Nevada. We wouldn't even ship dotcom to California because of the insane prop 65 stuff.

Good for them, I'm glad they have the liberty to govern as they see fit.

California is full of firms dedicated to just this thing. Companies like 'asyousow' literally walk the aisles of stores looking for reasons to sue, because the average settlement is 6 figures. They'll force you into a consent decree settlement and look for violations to cash in some more. You said you'd change the label, but we found one that wasn't updated... cha ching

My local walmart doesn't label the toy section boys or girls. All the cars are in one section, guns and nerf shite in one, maybe action figures in the middle, all dolls on one isle, etc.

No signs say BOYs section or Girls section. Sooooooooooooo, wtf does this law do other than making finding a nerf gun a pain in the arse?

isn't that presumptuous to assume certain toys are only for girls and some are only for boys? That assumption has to be made to say the stores weren't doing it already.

You ever notice how people who transition from male to female always try to be overly feminine (dresses, pink stuff, purchase things traditionally associated with females) while females to male do the same but with male items?

I was drunk after the LSU game Saturday night and saw something about a transsexual and it was the first time I had really thought about that and found it interesting.

WTF is wrong with California?

Most stores already have this, it's where you find the games and puzzles.

Its so great to hear California is working on the real problems in society as opposed to their tax and business policies that encourage people to flee their state, the mobs running out of stores with arms full of merchandise, and the homeless people shitting all over the sidewalks in their major cities.

Solution in search of a problem that doesn't exist. I can't remember going to Walmart or Target and having the toy aisles labeled by gender. They were sorted by the type of toy or what TV/movie franchise it was from. Princess themed Lego sets were next to the Star Wars Legos. Pink Mustang Power Wheels were next to Ford Raptor Power Wheels. Is it a problem because the Avengers toys are on the next aisle over from Frozen toys?
