And comparing the response in nations with hundreds or even thousands of confirmed cases, stricken by pathetic healthcare systems, and even worse government intervention bureaus to the US is the height of dishonesty.

Comparing it to Italy, Japan, South Korea, is dishonesty? If we cannot use those countries as comparisons, then who can we use?

Italy has quarantined over 100,000 people with armed police. Japan shut its schools for the remainder of the school year. South Korea has one of the best healthcare systems in the world and they are running out of hospital beds.

Are you really squarely focused on the semantics of him saying "suspected"? Because the actual number of people impacted/being monitored/quarantined/"suspected of carrying the disease" in California is far, far lower than in any of the three countries I mentioned.

And the other 46 are either from the Diamond cruise or Wuhan directly.

We’re almost 2 months past the initial outbreak.

Naw bruh. The Hill headline right now:
California monitoring 8400 people for the Coronavirus

And Reuters
Thousand in California being monitored for coronavirus

Marketwatch and CNBC with similar headlines. No agenda here, folks.

Bro, you're quoting a wire service while asserting that the media has an agenda because the headlines are similar. Thats what wire services do.

Maybe, just maybe, you should stop looking to Italy and South Korea to back up Newsome's asinine, fear mongering press conference, and focus on the reality here in the US and official statements by the CDC - the world's top authority on the matter.

I have, and do. The CDC has no clue how many cases we actually have here because we are not testing anyone, at least anywhere the rate that others are testing. The US has performed less than 1,000 total tests for the virus. The CDC itself admits that is inadequate--but there were issues with the first batch of tests they sent out.

Just this week the CDC's spokesperson for respiratory disease stated that community spread in the United States is not a matter of it, but of when and how many will fall seriously ill.

Sweet! Now link me to where the CDC, or fricking anyone besides Newsome, tried to speculate a total number of potential carriers based on mere proximity, then blurt that shite out to the media igniting a 1000 point market sell-off.

I'll wait.

My company has a fairly large conference planned for late May. We haven’t been given orders to book travel yet. I’m betting they will cancel too. It will save the company money and the higher ups probably don’t even want to go to the conference so it’s a convenient excuse to cancel.

I work for a hotel company and we already have many groups trying to test the waters of cancelling their contracts without paying the cancellation fees under the "force majeure" clause. Some of these events are months out. One is next fricking year. We are politely telling these groups that they are welcome to cancel but they will be required to pay ever dollar of the cancellation fee. This doesn't even come close to qualifying as grounds for cancellation in the US at this time.

Can you remember the last time the Fed commented on a disease?

He wasn't speculating wildly. He said that is how many people California is monitoring.

This is totally irrelevant to the decision making process for what to say and when in this instance. Sorry if you looked at your portfolio this afternoon and got all riled up. It will bounce back, which is yet another reason why the "tank the stock market" angle is senseless. There is no long game in that strategy. China will get moving again and the market will improve, not just stay down forever because Gavin Newsome said 9,000 people were being watched for symptoms.

My God. How in love with Gavin Newsome are you?

We need to endure a goddam 4+% market sell off and scare the shite out of everyone in the process because little Gavin wants to blurt out a big, scary number? He could have kept his fricking mouth shut, and maybe someone would actually want to vacation in wine country this summer.

Idiot.

No, I can't. I also can't recall governors doing exponential modeling on the potential number of infected in their states.

Where did you get that this guy was an NBC reporter?

His Twitter profile says he's Director of Booking for @MSNBC

Did you read this somewhere, or did you just post that without even reading his profile??

More paranoid B.S.

You don't think that conservative news sites don't do the same thing?

It happens every day on both sides. Just so happens that conservatives (like you) whine about it more often.
