LA does the same thing here. Got an EV/Hybrid Fee mailed to me on my wifes new Camry.
MS as well. They add a hybrid fee to my car tag each year due to less gas tax revenue with the higher gas mileage.

Alabama does also.
I believe the current fee is $203 additional per year for a battery electric vehicle, which increases in 2027 and every four years thereafter.

That’s different than the OP. It’s to replace gas taxes for road maintenance.

It isn't a replacement for gas tax. It is a replacement for lost SMOG inspection revenue.
This then makes me ask;
Did they really institute SMOG inspections to help the environment or was it just revenue generation all along?

I think I spent into the few thousands buying service and parts for cars that wouldn't pass inspection in metro counties in Georgia just to get the damn OBD indicator to turn off (didn't help with any smog bs whatsoever)
