1. Be realistic, most can't be rehabbed. That's an outdated notion.

While I don't think it should be the main purpose of our prison system, they definitely can't be rehabbed with this guy's attitude.

2. While that's not necessarily accurate, why does it offend anyone?

Take a guess.

3. I took that to mean that they actually intend to release a few who are doing well and those are the sorts he supports for release.

Most are taking it the opposite way: that he doesn't want them released because he likes having free labour.

More likely to have been convicted of more crimes? Of they are hinting at race, I don't see it. Is there some sort of disparity between parish jails and state prisons?

Personal experience reading through hundreds of RAP sheets and minutes from courts. But there might be a way to find data. I don't care enough to dig though.

The state of Louisiana is trying to save money. The Sheriff is upset because not only is he going to loose money from housing inmates he is also going to lose his free labor source.
Most parish inmates get time removed from their sentence by being trustees. That is their pay.
He is losing a big chunk of his revenue source and he will have to actually hire people to do those jobs which shrinks his profit margin.
If you think that this is about reforming criminals or crime rates you are confused. It's all about the money

Which is the absolute last thing law enforcement should be about.

Cutting down on Non-violent prisoners in Parish prisons will save $260 million in tax payer money. Why do you love big government?

Seems like something a judge should decide.

Oh....and working in a DA office doesn't give you much insight. I prosecuted for years...doesn't make my opinion more special.

Well, lemme splain it to ya in words that even you might understand.
Sheriff is not a lifetime appointment. You have to run. Prator, a conservative, keeps winning in a very democrat area. In fact, his job is to arrest democrats because they commit all the crime.

When Prator has an opponent they do this thing called 'opposition research'. If Prator were on the take he would have been outed a long time ago.

I'm not laughing at the specifics of the sheriff being reelected. I'm laughing at your assertion that longevity is proof nothing is afoul.

Listening to Steve Prator talk makes me so very glad that I moved away from Louisiana. I knew Steve in high school. He dated my sister. I took speech classes in order to learn how not to sound like a cousin fricking, backwoods, swamp water redneck like Steve Prator sounds. Whenever I go back to visit, I will attend church with my parents. Everyone sounds just like that and my wife tells me that after a few days around them I tend to fall back into old speech mannerisms for a few days so I try to avoid customer contact for at least three days after visiting so I can go back to sounding like a normal person that isn't straight off the cotton patch.
Sounds like you've indeed made it. Congrats.

It is not proof. It is evidence. Of course, in some communities being a known criminal helps you get elected. Like Marion Barry in DC.

That is the bottom line. All other arguments are bs and political at their core.

The honest folk elected Trump...NOT because of his fuax civility and sensitivity, but because he told the ugly, non-PC truth straight up and 'offended' the Opposition. They need to be offended. Same with this Guy...just keep the Thugs off the good folk so the good folk can pull the wagon. Otherwise...the good folk will abandon Law and take care of business vigilante style.

That said, the money angle (above) is a likely factor. The Sheriff is left with the worst, who are too much trouble to even work. It's his job; if he can't stand the heat he'll have to split.

I don't see the racism in his comments but I do see the issue of subsidized free labor. I went back to DeSoto Parish recently. Racism is alive and well there but so are the some of the issues that plague the black community. Thankfully murder and violent crime aren't among the issues.

I learned how to speak non-country black person English when I was kid because I didn't want my accent to be a barrier to opportunity. Still there is a certain beauty to the ability to slur and blend words together. I don't get to Louisiana much and I'm losing my ear for the speech. It is a bit embarrassing to have to ask people to repeat themselves.

Sheriffs are nothing more than politicians. I'm sure it varies by state, but in the South they are often dirtier than the average politician. They don't have term limits, they rarely have serious challengers, they rule over their own little fiefdoms, and they are at the heart of the good ole boy network.

I see people make similar statements rather gratuitously and I wonder if they really in all actuality witness true racism or is it them projecting their own racist outlook onto the world around them.
Describe for us the racist acts you witnessed while you were "back home".
