Business Insider: Map shows how many homeless Americans there are in every state

Every year, the Department of Housing and Urban Development publishes a report to Congress on the state of the homeless population in the US. One of the core elements of the report is a “point in time estimate,” or an annual count of the homeless population across the country taken on a single night in late January.
The above map shows the number of homeless people in the HUD’s count in January 2018, the most recent year for which data is available, per 10,000 residents of each state in that year.
The report noted that there were about 553,000 homeless people nationwide in the January 2018 count, slightly up from the 2017 count but much lower than the estimate a decade earlier of about 640,000 in 2008.

The south may have lots of problems, but one area these states have been really really good at is housing policy. Those homeless numbers compared to coastal and northeastern states are very impressive.

Most of the high ones on the list correspond with high cost of living states and/or temperate climates where being homeless isn’t necessarily a death sentence due to inclement weather.

You sure that’s not a 2016 election map?

I'm shocked ND is so high
It's just because they only have 500k residents...and 8 homeless shelters that house 100 people+ each...they have openings...
That place is so cold it kills people that sleep outside...
I lived there short of a decade, hence the handle

Washington and Oregon have at least double Florida’s rate, and NY is over three times Florida’s rate. Climate probably is A factor but it’s not driving the bus.

OK 10
90% of the transients here in the Sooner state must live right there in that little area. It's bad.

They are not homeless. They are either sick or bums. Bums have a choice and be put in jail. The sick need to be in rehab. Neither belong in the fricking street.

It is much easier than ND, I lived both places for years...
I went to Air Force's Cool School outside of Fairbanks...as long as the winter doesn't dip too cold, its possible to survive outdoors without a ton of issues

People have been doing it for millenniums, it is just our modern candy asses that have an issue with it.
