Burgess Owens, Gladys Knight and even Medgar Evers, was LDS, until his death in 1963.
You are correct, in as much as black males couldn't hold the priesthood, until 1978 because of the so called curse of Ham, in the book Genesis.

And why did it change in 1978?
Because LDS was about to lose its tax-exempt status due to its positions on blacks (and the IRS already won their case against Bob Jones University, so they had precedent).
Then suddenly the head of the LDS (who is considered a prophet in their church) had a "revelation from God" which allowed blacks to be priests.
(BTW when Utah wanted to become a state but couldn't due to polygamy, the then head of LDS suddenly had a "revelation" disallowing it. The Mexico group who was murdered are a split-off group which still practice it, though do you ever hear the MSM say anything other than that they were Mormons?)

She was supposedly a very bad candidate. I know someone who worked with GOP there. She thought she was going to win easily and was lazy. She refused to do appearances and town hall meetings until the final few weeks when the race was a dead heat. She was actually ahead and declared victory but the recount and vote harvesting got her in the end like all GOP candidates in the west.
