So the first three words of your title "Broken Promise: Trump" have nothing to do with your post? Then why put it in the title if it's not pertinent to the conversation?

It was just meant to be used as a figure of speech. That is all. As in, "hey, Trump changed positions on something."

The fact that it has really bothered people on here is just bewildering.

It is a classic move. I mean, we are on the 3rd page, and there have only been maybe 1 or 2 posts discussing Medicare. Y'all know what y'all are doing.

Dems call trump out on putting the wrong sock on first. They are cats staring at the first shiny thing they see with no ability to see a couple moves ahead. Chess is talked about regularly in here but it is a real example of their inability to see even one move ahead.

You are obfuscating and have failed miserably to start a conversation about medicare, if that was your goal.

When you start with a lie you have lost

’m just saying, allowing Medicare to directly negotiate the price of drugs is one of the major ways Trump could drain the swamp. It essentially renders pharma’s lobbyists powerless in blocking any reform that makes drug prices more transparent.

One of my favorite things about this site is people confidently asserting things that they have zero clue about.

You’re window dressing one of Trump’s major weaknesses. He makes absolute statements with almost zero in-depth knowledge of a topic.

A) it’s way too soon to call this a broken promise

B) really? This is what the news outlets are doing now? Going back to the campaign to find small things that he hasn’t yet done? Let’s ignore the whole Korean peace thing and everything else good that’s been happening.

Then you’d know Medicare negotiating directly with pharma companies for pricing is fraught with difficulties.

We can't focus on multiple issues at a time?

If Trump were to direct Azar to select the Part D plan with the highest negotiating power, like United, and have him set the drugs and prices that are on United's formulary as the maximum price all other Part D plans can charge for those drugs, you'll see a drop. Sure, it won't be a massive drop at first, and United and PhRMA would fight like hell, but that's the power the Executive branch can wield over their influence. Part D plans wouldn't even have to reveal their reasoning behind their prices in the first place.

This of course leaves open the possibility for another drug like Harvoni to come to market with astronomical price tags, but giving the Secretary the power to negotiate a reasonable price specifically for breakthrough drugs could also lessen the impact across the rest of the market down the road.

In this scenario, Trump would be making a drastic move that could later render highly positive outcomes for drug prices in the future. Of course it is difficult, but this is a very difficult issue.
