He was a second string QB when he became a free agent. Why? BECAUSE HE SUCKED. Once the NFL figured out his schtick and realized he couldn't really pass the football, his career as a starter was over.
But, even with that, 49ers offered him a contract at something like $10 million/year. It would have made him one of the highest paid backups IN HISTORY.
HE TURNED IT DOWN.
He wanted $20-30 million (starter money) to be a backup.
