Boeing Communications Chief Resigns Over 1987 Article re Women in Combat

After an anonymous complaint about a 33-year-old article arguing women should not serve in combat, the Boeing Company's communications chief abruptly resigned.
quote:
My article was a 29-year-old Cold War navy pilot's misguided contribution to a debate that was live at the time," said Niel Golightly said in a statement accompanying Boeing's announcement. Although his view was mainstream at the time, and women are still not required to register for the draft, Golight said his article was "embarrassingly wrong and offensive."
quote:
Golightly served for 14 years in the U.S. Navy, as a fighter pilot and as speechwriter to the secretary of the Navy and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He became Boeing's vice president for communications Jan. 1 and was said to be introducing sweeping changes.
quote:
An excerpt of his offending article on the U.S. Naval Institute website, titled "No Right to Fight," said: "At issue is not whether women can fire M-60s, dogfight MiGs, or drive tanks. Introducing women into combat would destroy the exclusively male intangibles of war fighting and the feminine images of what men fight for -- peace, home, family."

Should have stuck to his guns.

He’s only part-right. They shouldn’t be in the military at all.

Why do people always apologize?
If they just, as you say stuck their guns, they wouldn’t lose their jobs.

For real. I would make liberal heads explode because I would tell whoever asked that it was my opinion and to frick off if they didn't like it.

That depends on the company in question. You also have to consider whether we are getting the full story. He could have been 'asked' to leave.

There's a difference between women flying fighter jets and being front line special operators doing hand to hand combat. It's a physical ability thing not mental ability.
Plenty of women have made great fighter pilots but very few men have the skills to be a SEAL or Delta Force even.

Pretty confident more qualified men were passed over to allow them women in the fighter jets.
How many successful female race car drivers do you see? Probably the most similar skill set with it comes to reaction times and control.

I'm sure he got a huge payout, and all he had to do to get it was fall in line. People know the truth, but they also like fat checks. Don't blame him.

Who was that early female naval aviator who crashed and died?

That's what I love about Trump, he never does.

All of them?

Cool. Let's bring out some Joe Biden quotes from 1987.

Kara Hultgreen. Partly her fault, partly faulty design of that version of F14.

Disagree. I think it is more of a matter of fewer women pursuing race car driver and fighter pilot careers than lawyer or accountant. Same concept with minorities in certain career fields.

it golden parachute time. Boeing has to cut half of its staff and this dude even though he has been with Boeing for 6 months opts out
