I did research using AI and also listen to a mayor from a town that had one of these in his town. The electricity goes up for all the residents, and feel free to check this, one reason being that the new substations power lines and things like this have to be paid for. And the Blanchard Louisiana instance, Amazon has said they will pay for that stuff out of their own pocket. The mayor that had one of these in his town who was on the moon griffon show, said The data center had agreed to pay for the substations and power lines in his city as well. But the drawback he said was that the power company double dips. Even though they get paid from the Data center for these things they still do a rate hike to all the residents and they never lower the rate hike. I have not found an instance of a data center going in any city where the residents did not pay more on their power bills after the data center was fully functional. If you don't believe this or have evidence otherwise please check for yourself. This is not a good deal.

Doesn't sound like it. Thanks for checking that out.

These have to be the same people/ organized by the same people that show up and fight oil pipelines and fracking.

I doubt it. Blanchard isn't exactly "Wokeville, USA." The main street in "downtown" Blanchard has two stop lights.

I kind of get the water and electrical concerns but the chick bring interviewed wants to stop a major 12 billion dollar project because she won't be able to hunt in her backyard.

I live in a rural butt frick town living off the guvment cause we ain't got no jobs but hey, I get to hunt deer off my back porch!

The AI accelerator GPU racks they utilize consume insane amounts of electricity, producing massive amounts of heat as a byproduct. Water is needed for the cooling systems.

I asked the question being fully aware of this. I just didn't want it to turn into some sort of argument where we were going back and forth while coming from a different understanding of how it works. Was also hoping for some clarification as to why he was so certain of this enormous water usage.

Those data centers use large chiller units for most cooling.

Those chillers need to be cooled. Is this particular data center going to use a cooling tower? If so, then possibly they'll use enormous amounts of water. But if they're using an open loop from say, a river, then whatever water is taken from the river gets returned to the river... albeit at a slightly higher temperature. My guess is no more than about 20 degrees warmer. Whether that's acceptable or not depends on the size of the river or lake.

There is absolutely no chance in hell they hire the jobs they said they will.

None of them come close to much smaller numbers

I get where you're coming from. But the data center after it is built will only employ about 150 people max per data center. Definitely not enough upside to justify how much electricity prices will be going up for all the residents in the city and for the lower water pressure that we are expecting to see.

If they employee 150 I’d be shocked. Massive ones struggle to reach 20.

The cities/states are giving up big property incentives, and sales tax exemptions for the investment and barely getting 20 jobs and none of those jobs are going to locals.

The data centers are driving some of the backlash here in GA against credits and incentives. It’s made credits a hot topic as part of also lowering personal income tax to 0

Also as usual Louisiana is behind the curve. People thought the film tax credits were a sham, wait until they see this.

South Carolina was early on data centers putting in statutory credits and exemptions and they have cooled a lot on it a lot.

Sierra club whacko liberals foment and fund the protests, locals fall hook, line and sinker. Rinse and repeat.

Good for them. It’s out of control how bad these things are for the locals.

Typical tech companies going the “ask permission later” process. Gladly people are seeing this kind of early in the game instead of after it’s an established unremovable nuisance.

Hope the local govts don’t frick the locals over but most likely the case.

Just playing devil's advocate here.

New data centers won't consume as much water. Amazon is spending 12 BILLION to build. With a little negotiating, they could probably cover the majority of the cost to build the powerplant.

Thousands of high paying construction jobs for probably two years. People buying trucks and tools and homes. 150 data center jobs. Power plant jobs. Restaurants to feed people. Stores. Commerce.

But muh electric rates went up! Sorry, that is backwards thinking when there are no jobs and no future currently.

So far I'm kinda neutral on them. The alarmists about the water usage are almost universally incorrect with these new one's. But the electricity usage is enormous. I believe they should have to offset that with input to the grid. And a lot of these are doing that. Got a baw losing his lease around Many to one of these solar projects connected to these deals. I expect us to get fricked, but we could sure use the cash.

Don’t forget about the sound issues. I read about one town that had a constant hum from the water chillers driving everyone insane.

Data Centers also use incredible amounts of water and there must also be concern that it will strain the water supply.

"Incredible" amounts

How is that quantified?
Do residents raise concerns over golf courses?
Farms?
Factories?

Over water supply?

Trump signed a pretty big deal today on data centers and power. It is a win/win. Google it if you want to appear smart.
