When I was younger, I had a job that for some reason a few times daily I got asked if we had a Veteran discount. We didn't, but it was kind of annoying. Anyway, I brought it up in convo with some co-workers, and they all agreed, how it just came off as a pity question. One of my co-workers was super adamant about how much she hated being asked it, because it remind her of a cousin who was Mr. Veteran in everything he did. Clothes, bumper stickers, etc etc. She said he enlisted, and end up in the logistics side of things State side for his whole career. So he was considered the putz of the family, because he just over did it on the Veterans thing with no humility. iirc the whole family thought he did something or said something to help avoid going to a war zone, but able to stay on in a safe way. I can't remember.

I can't do it. I'll use it at Lowes or large companies that advertise it, but if you don't have a sign out that's a douche move to just come out and ask. And some places, like one of the locally owned restaurants, even if there's a sign I just don't do it.
