He also bangs (or is banged by) a lot of dudes.

Green Day has had lots of hits. They've sold millions of albums, play stadiums today, and are in the RnR HOF.
R&R Hall of Fame, eh? Well that settles it. GD is better than Nuge who’s been rocking and hunting since before GD was born.
LOL. If the Phag even eats Meat, BJ buys it from the market. Nuge hunts his. I’ll put Nuge in front of faux machine controlled lightweights any day.

I guess he's fortunate to have the wealth to go where he wishes.
Maybe England or Columbia is a good fit for him. Freedom is a good thing to have even if it some times you lose wisdom.

They were contrived and designed to have lots of hits, sell millions of records, and play stadiums.
They were/are a pop band.
Most (though not all) acts that have sold millions of records, had lots of hits, and play stadiums were/are pop acts. The "pop" is short for "popular," after all.
That doesn't mean it doesn't take a certain talent to be Green Day. But it's kind of a shallow talent.

He did have a knack for writing catchy chunes
Posted on 1/27/25 at 10:32 pm to wackatimesthree
It's incredibly difficult to write catchy pop songs. Just because something is simple, doesn't make it easy. Also, early Green Day had some seriously difficult and interesting bass parts. The guitar parts were always rudimentary and simple, but listen to the bass on "Longview". I'm not going to pretend that it's on par with Billy Sheehan, Jaco Pastorius, or Victor Wooten, but it's light years beyond the average bass lines of the era.

When he moves to Mother England and loathes it, revoke his visa a little while. He should stay over there at least as long as Ellen did before she came weeping back, just so he can appreciate it.

No, by the time that record came out I was in my mid-30s and working 80 hours a week building a business with a wife and two kids at home who were going to starve if I didn't find a way to make it profitable, so you are correct, I am not familiar with that album.
Reading about it, however, it sounds a bit ridiculous. A "punk-rock opera?"
Sounds to me like they tried too hard to go legit with that one.
But, you're right. I have not heard it.

It tells a pretty good story of working class dissatisfaction, overcoming addiction, and the creeping police state of the post 9-11 world. It even spawned a Broadway Musical. It really was a super pop-culture relevant album during the last gasp of albums being capable of truly transcending genres and being relevant in the uniculture. It wasn't a fluke, either.
You might roll your eyes at some of the dated stuff in it now (especially the George Bush references), but if you listen with an open mind, you might enjoy it.

Both were completely contrived acts designed to present a watered down, lowest common denominator, disposable version of what was popular at the time with older, more discriminating and sophisticated fans (in the case of The Monkeys, that was the Beatles. In the case of Green Day, it was Nirvana.)
wut? beatles>monkees is fair, even acknowledged by the monkees. green day sounds nothing like nirvana
team kingbob here. it's perfect power pop punk, which i happen to love. nobody's looking to green day for advice or insight, which makes american idiot even more spectacular
and for those saying 1 hit wonder...american idiot, 21st century breakdown and radio revolution albums all hit #1. dookie, insomniac and uno albums all topped at #2. warning, father of all mfr's and saviour #4
75 million records sold. kid rock? 26m. the nuge? 40m. the who? 43m. so yea, they're kind of a big deal. i would never disrespect lemmy/motorhead by comparing them to anyone
saw a great lemmy quote just yesterday. was asked "what did motorhead bring to music" and he said something like, zero, nada, zilch. we took away. we took away the 10 minute drum solos, the costumes, pretentiousness and just rocked
lemmy's a class unto himself
eta got sucked into looking. american idiot and dookie sold more copies than michael jackson off the wall, def leppard hysteria, pink floyd wish you were here, hootie's cracked rear view and brittney oops i did it again. hardly one hit wonders
