They were/are a pop band.

Most (though not all) acts that have sold millions of records, had lots of hits, and play stadiums were/are pop acts. The "pop" is short for "popular," after all.

That doesn't mean it doesn't take a certain talent to be Green Day. But it's kind of a shallow talent.

It's incredibly difficult to write catchy pop songs. Just because something is simple, doesn't make it easy. Also, early Green Day had some seriously difficult and interesting bass parts. The guitar parts were always rudimentary and simple, but listen to the bass on "Longview". I'm not going to pretend that it's on par with Billy Sheehan, Jaco Pastorius, or Victor Wooten, but it's light years beyond the average bass lines of the era.

When he moves to Mother England and loathes it, revoke his visa a little while. He should stay over there at least as long as Ellen did before she came weeping back, just so he can appreciate it.

No, by the time that record came out I was in my mid-30s and working 80 hours a week building a business with a wife and two kids at home who were going to starve if I didn't find a way to make it profitable, so you are correct, I am not familiar with that album.

Sounds to me like they tried too hard to go legit with that one.

It tells a pretty good story of working class dissatisfaction, overcoming addiction, and the creeping police state of the post 9-11 world. It even spawned a Broadway Musical. It really was a super pop-culture relevant album during the last gasp of albums being capable of truly transcending genres and being relevant in the uniculture. It wasn't a fluke, either.

You might roll your eyes at some of the dated stuff in it now (especially the George Bush references), but if you listen with an open mind, you might enjoy it.
