Will be difficult to enforce

Teachers can barely get some to sit down. Maybe a private Catholic school can enforce this, most others, good luck policing a generation conditioned to seeing their phone as a second heartbeat that must be in your hands at all times.

That's fair I suppose, but the problem is that phones are no longer just phones.

I'd be fine with kids having access to a basic flip phone that only makes calls. They still make those. The problem is that phones today are personal entertainment devices with bottomless content.

Does the small threat of a school shooting justify letting kids use their phones all day at school? I doubt it.

The dopamine withdrawal will be nasty, but it has to happen.

We managed just fine before cellphones were invented.

They can manage fine now. I will go ahead and say if they store them in their lockers at least 5% a week will get stolen

That needs to be done all over the country. Kids have enough distractions in their lives as it is. No need for them to even have a cellphone activated while in school, period.

Just telling you what someone from Ochsner Behavioral Health told me when we were talking about our school banning social media and then led to talking about phones . There is just a lot of overlap between phones and ipad functions that makes writing these laws difficult. Maybe Alabama laws have a very specific line between the two.

The law specifically outlines how this must be implemented. It’s not just a phone ban. It’s a communications ban. No personal phones, Apple Watches, iPads, laptops, or even AirPods. Any other device that has similar capability is forbidden.

School-sanctioned technology must be regulated via district protocols (blocking websites for example) that prevent students from accessing social media.

Also, teachers and staff can anonymously report which teachers and admins are not following the law.

It’s crazy how schools ever let it get this bad with phones. Phones were banned in school past 2010 at least. We just kept our sweet flip phones in our backpack. It’s not a big deal to not use your phone during the day at school.

Once the exceptions start everyone will still have their phone bc they are all special. Bottom line it's like the entitled parking in handicap parking spots. I see it all day, lazy people. I could give you the demographic breakdown with race/age/gender but it might upset everyone. Believe me, I'm shocked how many people think they are entitled to that blue parking spot.

I'm for these bill in theory but I wonder what the consequences will be once enacted? If it's not serious, then the law is a joke and it's a ban in name only. There has been some study in this. The AL Bill says phones must be off and stored away etc etc....that's crap. They also don't say what happens if someone is caught with a phone...will they be suspended? Phone taken?

The reality is, they should ban them on the campus, like they use to ban calculators in math class. Not allowed at all.

Parents are the problem. The phone is a digital umbilical cord and they need to know what their baby is up to at all times etc etc. The reality is, unless they kick the kids out of the school for some time or don't allow them at all, these are going to be joke laws meant to posture more than solve the problem.

The bill does contain exceptions for children with health issues that necessitate the use of a cell phone. For example, diabetics who monitor their blood sugar with a mobile app or students with personalized education plans.

There will be 60% of those kids with notes from doctors explaining why their kids need their phones. Parents will helicopter this to death.

If the states can jam in prisons then they can jam in school settings?

Sometimes technology works as an advantage?

Meaningless law. Good luck taking the phone away from a black student.
