Being an expert in one field does not make you knowledgeable in another.

My point is he might not be a scientist academically but I don't think that he's lacking in scientific knowledge generally speaking

Contrary to your assertion, there’s plenty of people on this board with graduate and post graduate work who have more of a claim of expertise than bill nye.
His biggest credential is that he made a public access kids show in the 90s.
