\Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont called on the nation’s top artificial intelligence companies to pause development of the technology, saying the corporations have already lost control of models that could cause “potentially cataclysmic results” for millions of people.
In a letter to the chief executives of OpenAI, Anthropic and Meta on Monday, Mr. Sanders cited statements by the companies saying they would halt or delay new models if the technology became too risky to safely manage. He argued that threshold had recently been passed.
“It is not too late to avoid disaster,” wrote Mr. Sanders. “Stop building machines that humans cannot control.”
A separate letter released on Monday by a group of House Democrats called on House Speaker Mike Johnson to “immediately schedule” hearings with the CEOs of the largest A.I. companies.
Politicians are increasingly focusing on A.I. amid growing unease from voters who worry that the technology will raise their electricity costs, eliminate their jobs and hurt the value of their retirement savings if the industry falters. Much of their attention has been on banning or limiting the spread of data centers, which some Americans blame for rising energy bills and increased pollution.

at the constitutional convention, someone suggested a clause limiting the army to 25K soldiers
G. Washington said he would agree, if they also included a clause limiting opposing armies to 25K as well

AI might be the only thing capable of giving that loser the work-free economy he claims to want.
So of course he opposed it.

What could go wrong with AI.

Remember AI software developers are the same political persuasion as all previous tech companies. So what you get is more indoctrination.
Listening to Zuckerberg today talking about how AI will help your education, career, medical knowledge, etc. is frightening.
We are in a world of hurt and misery.

Unfortunately this is the new nuclear arms race. We have to keep up or risk putting our national security at risk.

Bernie and his “livable wage” bullshite for menial jobs ushered in the age of AI.

AI is basically like a gun. It's a matter of how it's used and the best defense is a bigger/better gun of your own.
I don't think it's even possible to stop it outside some worldwide cataclysm. Someone is going to be working on it somewhere, and just like guns - only the criminals and such will be the ones doing it.
He's probably more worried about the average joe using it and maybe not being feed the "right message". That's all I've really seen them care about.

As soon as he can get the chinese to stop, he can have his moratorium.
There is no benefit now to pausing.

So he's fighting against an AI Oligarchy? How original. I've never heard him use the word oligarchy before

Is there anything more useless than Bernie or a congressional hearing. I’m tired of these hearings that result in nothing.
