An earlier draft of his acceptance speech in ‘64 had harsher language than this line that it is known for. Eisenhower cringed at what was left in it but after having Goldwater explain it to him Eisenhower was on board with the sentiment.

The speech he gave at the 1960 convention and the issues within the GOP at the time is worth taking a look at if you are intrigued by his impact on conservatism.

Goldwater’s autobiography With No Apologies is a pretty interesting read. I have a signed copy of it on my bookshelf. Another good Goldwater resource was co-written/compiled by John Dean and Barry Goldwater Jr. and it’s called Pure Goldwater. That one is a bit more direct.

A bunch of years ago I bought my dad a t-shirt with Goldwater’s picture with a caption on it that says: “Don’t blame me, I voted for Goldwater.” The only time he wears it is when he goes to county fairs where he’ll stand by the local Democratic Party booth greeting people as they walk by just so he can irritate the folks working that booth.

Like is ideology but...

One of the worst presidential losses in history.

Have to find that mix of enough political appeal and acumen to get elected with enough backbone to do something once you are elected. You need both.

OP's post was a Goldwater quote. You were the first person to mention Trump.

“Cuck” is a pejorative that, on this board, is almost exclusively used by Trump fanboys.

Nothing got better until mobilization for WWII began.

And as to the title of the OP = Barry Goldwater was the man we needed at the time. And McCarthy turned out to be completely correct as well.

The mass media first exercised their muscle wrt to Goldwater = painted him just as the Democrat machine demanded.

IF ONLY AuH20 could have won that election we'd have been far better country than we turned out to be --> anybody would have been better than LBJ, but Goldwater was head and shoulders above anyone else in that era.

That convention did launch Reagan's career, tho.

I’d like to point out that he was slaughtered. The movement that he spearheaded only succeeded when someone who was able to speak in moderation to ALL Americans came along. That was Ronald Reagan.

Since we are quoting famous people, here is one by Otto von Bismark.

The Left takes advantage of it too!!! While Biden does stupid policies, we have inflation, a looming food crisis brought on by a f'd up supply chain, high gas prices. The Left comes out and says, " We gonna talk about Trump" Then the Trump fan boys all say, " Oh YEAH!!!! Orange Man Great."

Meanwhile the more they focus on Trump, the more the polls go bad for Republicans.

Yup. There was a global depression during that time.

Only in the U.S. was it known as the Great Depression.
