I have been reading up on it and it definitely seems sketchy. I've found threads from ten years ago where former members were claiming it is a cult.

Any church can be seen as a cult. Parishioners tend to live near each other. I hang out with priests, deacons, and lay people from my church. We give money to our church. What's the big deal?

I am not a communist. I am a socialist the democratic socialist kind. The Catholic Worker Movement by Dorothy Day along with many Protestants have been supportive of a Christian, non-Marxist approach to socialism.

People of Praise has its roots in Pentecostalism. In fact, it was started by them and for some strange reasons has become 80 percent Catholic. I am all in favor of lay catholic communities. There are a lot of them. There is a very large lay Franciscan society that is definitely NOT a cult. That provides fellowship, community, and spiritual guidance and spiritual growth.
From what I gather People of Praise borders on cult-like activity. Now there should not be a religious test for public service unless a person's religion interferes with their public duties. The person should leave public service or refuse herself.
