By the end of his presidency on January 20, 2017, Barack Obama had exercised his constitutional power to grant executive clemency—that is, "pardon, commutation of sentence, remission of fine or restitution, and reprieve"[1]—to 1,927 individuals convicted of federal crimes. Of the acts of clemency, 1,715 were commutations (including 504 life sentences) and 212 were pardons.[2] Most individuals granted executive clemency by Obama had been convicted on drug charges,[3] and had received lengthy and sometimes mandatory sentences at the height of the War on Drugs.[4] Obama holds the record for the largest single-day use of the clemency power, granting 330 commutations on January 19, 2017, his last full day in office.[5][6] He also has issued more commutations than the past thirteen presidents combined.[2][7]

Obama's use of executive privilege

I'd be ok with Trump pardoning non-violent drug offenders at the same rate as Obama.

Change the name from Obama to Trump and the answer would be every Democrat around.

Trump is at 7 in a year and half: which would be roughly a total of less than 50, if he serves 8 years....

Libtard logic: how dare he abuse his power of office to reward his friends

And expectedly, you have idiocy such as this from from the Vox thread:

quote:

It’s also a flagrant example of the president using one of his few virtually unlimited powers to reward political allies and celebrity friends — and that should trouble even the most ardent supporters of Johnson’s commutation.

If he doesn't like these mandatory minimums, why didn't he push Congress to change them? Maybe tell his AG to cool down the war on drugs. Trump should do thr same thing.

I’m happier with a quality over quantity argument on this one.

I'd be OK with legalizing MJ and commuting/pardoning every living non-violent weed related offender.

Laying it on thick here. She is one of many statistics of Nancy's War, but she probably killed a few with overdoses from her drugs.

Non violent drug offenders > swamp creatures like rod blagojevich or the self pardon.

Except it's not a direct linear relationship to time...hence "330 on his last day" or 17% were done on the very last day of an 8 year tenure.

So my question still stands, it's just posed to two people now.

People over 60. In both parties. I've known plenty of old democrats stuck in the 80s drug war.
