As a video gamer, I don’t get why people get so defensive about shooters and video games

I’m not trying to blame violent games for causing people to crack, but I don’t get why biden and trump got so much flack today for rightfully observing that not only are games getting more realistically brutal, but it often involves players killing humans.

I always found it grotesque for example that a COD game included committing a mass shooting at an airport

But the larger issue is that video game addiction is a gateway to alienation and resentment.

There’s a reason why people who played extensive amounts of sports in HS or were involved in other extracurricular activities almost never are the culprits of this bloodshed.

Video games are entertaining and can even be extremely education (about history) if you know where to look, but I do think they are causing teens and young men to lose meaning in their lives.

I'll admit that that level in that game is the only time I've ever felt physically uneasy playing a game. And I slaughtered entire cities full of people without a problem in GTA.

But that level in CoD. I don't know. It just felt wrong and fricked up on a whole nother level. I quit playing realistic first person shooters after that.

I don't think video games are causing people to lose meaning and I don't think they're some kind of catalyst for normal people. But I absolutely think they can be a trigger for an already mentally deranged person though.

I think this is where video games can be a problem. When violent video games consume most of one’s time and/or become a person’s life, and that person then alienates from society, problems can arise. The game and its content become that person’s reality.

You're killing someone each time you pick up the remote.

IDK, but networks certainly are not interested in pursuing Trump's identification of hideous 24/7 news coverage as causative.

I think that is more the issue than the violence itself. The issue is the isolation and detachment it brings.

I enjoyed a good bloody FPS in my day and like violent movies for the most part, but I value the sanctity of life more now than ever. I’m a pro-life, anti death penalty, anti war guy, but I love a little shoot em up.

I skipped that level in CoD. I killed a ton of innocent people in 100s of games in my life (mostly accidentally running over people in GTA) but the concept of that level bothered me too much. I didn’t even like the replay of it in the next CoD:MW.

I dont get why we are even bothering to entertain this tired dated theory that has proven to be the generic blame card for for any act of violence when people either can't think of another reason or just prefer to dance around the others.

ETA it truly says "I've given absolutely no thought to this issue".

Isn't it funny how video games are sold worldwide but somehow America is the only country with these routine mass shootings?

America is far from the only country with mass violence. Other countries have people do it with knives and trucks, but mentally psychotic people occasionally snap and kill. It happens. It's not unique to America.

Guess you guys ignored literally the first sentence of my post

My point is that alienation and lack of meaning is a problem affecting a lot of young people today, and I wonder if gaming might be associated with that.

In my day, we had games like Contra that you conquered in 3 days, and then you forgot about it.

And we liked it!

It’s a tired argument that’s been used for years. I’ll admit that violent video games and (god forbid) movies have desensitized people to violence, but these are not the things that need to be the core focus for fixing this problem. I think the problem is more cultural and root cause is dissociation with our fellow man through dissolving of the traditional American family. Many Boomers and Gen Xers did not parent as well as previous generations. I’m sure that having both parents working full time in modern America also plays a part in it.

There’a no legislation that can fix this unfortunately. It’s not that simple.

Are video games alienating people or are alienated people just attracted to video games? Same with movies and music, certain people are just attracted to darker, more violent forms of entertainment.

Not everyone is 6 years old mentally and needs Nintendo fluff, any mature adult is passed the primary color/automatically win games they sell.

The idea that video games are a gateway to alienation and resentment I feel is false today. Video games are becoming much more mainstream and there are plenty of communities for people to find friends. Being called a nerd really isn't an insult anymore. If shooters made people curious about killing someone why isn't it the same for someone who's obsessed with violence in the fantasy genre. I don't see people who try to kill people with a bow or chop people up with an axe. The bigger issue is getting into an echo chamber where you are with a community of fricked up minds brainwashing you to the point of doing something stupid. Be that gangs, political organizations, crazy religious zealots, and so forth. In that regard where Trump was talking about the internet he is right.
