If they were born stupid or to dumb parents they're probably going to end up liberal.

My short response to this is.. in today's world upbringing is largely overshadowed by a world of other influences...

My older sister is a leftist and we are 2 years apart in age and grew up in the same household. She's not particularly vocal about it though and she's been very successful in life. She has a lot more money than I do

I was listening to an interview of a reporter who'd written an article with the conclusion that home ownership makes most people more conservative in their voting, since they had more to lose and it was in their best interest to maintain the status quo. A reasonable hypothesis.

Of course, because today journalists have to be advocates as opposed to reporters, she could not resist saying that therefore home ownership was "problematic" and the govt should cease home ownership incentives.

So what about folks that lean conservative on some issues and liberal on others?

No. This is all a very fluid concept. Value's change - - the definition of "conservative" and "liberal" changes - - the idealogies which purportedly protect the things we value in life change.

I was born very poor and we depended on social programs. My family was democratic for the most part. I ended up being a staunch Reagan conservative for 30+ years. A combination of changing values and the definition of "conservative" changing caused me to switch to " No Party" about 10 years ago. I am conservative on somethings and liberal on others. It is very hard for a party or single idealogy to pigeon-hole me. And that is not by design, but more the product of natural, organic change.

My very basic level analysis:

I think children are born conservative. They naturally have the take what is mine mindset. They are capitalists. That capital is in the form of fruit roll-ups, attention from mom and the daily bluey vs amazing spider man tv show battles.

They are taught to have more liberal ideas such as sharing and "everybody gets a turn" type stuff. I'm about as conservative as they come but even I enforce that with siblings. Very socialist concept that spills over into other areas of life for their little developing brain.

Once they become adults and understand the complexities and effects of being conservative/liberal most realistic people lean conservative. There was a time in the not so distant past that conservatives and liberals had the same goals (equal opportunity and access). We just had different paths of getting to that common goal. Now our end goals aren't the same unfortunately. Picking a side has become more important kids.

she took 8 years to graduate (again with debt.) i can't criticize too much, it took me 6, but i paid as i went.

she lived at home till she was 27. then got kicked out. she had the same job from 19-38. then my parents bought a business and hired her and she still works for them and goes home to do her laundry ever weekend.

i love her. don't get me wrong. she grew up a lesbian/atheist/leftist in a very conservative baptist home. my parents and i have our issues, but they've done a good job of not driving her away and making sure she had some good options.

This is like asking if people speak a certain language by nature.

Liberal means something different to someone in Louisiana than it does to someone in Norway. It's a nonsense question.

If you are young and not liberal, you have no heart. If you are older and not conservative, you have no brain.

Don't know if it has always been this way, but I certainly think in my generation, people who are actually "open-minded" and open to differing ideas tend to exclusively be on the conservative side. Every liberal I knew in high school or college would immediately shut down any dissenting idea or get VERY aggressive when they didn't like what they were hearing. This is why it always makes me laugh when I hear liberals say they are the open-minded ones.

To answer your question tho, this seems to me like a taught trait. They were taught what to think, not how to think.

People spend the first chunk of their life having every need filled by someone else and crying incessantly about everything being “unfair” when they don’t get their way, but sure, people are born conservative. Let me guess: they’re born religious, too?

As we are born with the stain of Original Sin, we are also born with the stain of Liberalism. It is humanity's natural inclination to think with its heart instead of with its brain.

i'm obviously leaving out some details i should include to be fair.

our mother was in an accident when i was 9 and she was 12 and was declared dead, resuscitated, and in a coma for a year. that had way worse of an affect on her than it did me.

we both developed some weird ticks, ADHD, anxiety, etc. my parents let her do ritalin and did not for me. she trended downward from there and dropped out of all sports and activities, thus hating jocks and the patriarchy.

when i got to jh i was good at sports and trended the other way.

It's no longer liberal vs. conservative, it's tribe vs. tribe.

Your tribe is determined by your skill at determining what others are lying about.
