With this ruling in Brunswick, are neighborhood watch’s a thing of the past? Not saying the ruling was incorrect, but seems to put a chill on anyone trying to patrol their neighborhood.

Just don't shoot the guy snooping around your neighborhood. If you call the cops, I don't think you go to jail for life.

I always thought neighborhood watches were just old people looking out their windows for suspicious behavior to call the cops on

No, but maybe take far more consideration in what your actions are than what the Georgia guys did. You should be able to defend yourself but you cant just shoot anyone that might raise suspicion. Im not willing to live with killing someone anyways, so it better well be absolutely necessary and unavoidable. There's nothing fun about killing someone no matter how much you may think its justified. Ask any combat vet.

No. Neighborhood watches were never about running down, confronting, then killing folks. They're about seeing things that are suspicious, then calling the police. You're being willfully obtuse if you believe otherwise.

Neighborhood watch people are armed with a flashlight and cell phone, maybe a whistle.

Why would they be neutered because two rednecks stopped drinking beer long enough to go chase a guy down with a shot gun?

With the ease of getting surveillance cameras and the likelihood that everyone has homeowners insurance, crimes against property of others wouldn’t motivate me to physically intervene at all, before or after this verdict. Cops get the benefit of QI, let them detain suspects and investigate property crimes.

Not by any means. There is a huge stretch between neighborhood watch and the decision in court today. Those 3 deserved what they got.

Not really. Keep watch, just don’t try to corner a stranger who hasn’t done anything wrong and shotgun them to death. You’ll be fine.

No.

The signs on most neighborhood watches actually say “we call the police” not “we will shoot you.”

Here’s the key:

If you see a guy walking or jogging down the street that you suspect may be up to no good...

Do call the police

Don’t load up a posse in a pickup truck, chase down guy you suspect may be up to no good, and point your guns at him, and ultimately kill him

That’s been a foundation of our law for quite some time now.

I really can't believe the stupid fricks we have here who are actually defending the McMichaels. I find it mindboggling that anybody thinks what these Neanderthals did was actually okay. I hope they rot in prison.

And even if he has done something wrong...say it’s beyond suspicion, say he actually did trespass or even steal something...don’t chase him down and hold him at gunpoint and ultimately shoot him dead.

You can only use deadly force in defense of life, not property.

I realize some people like to think they can run out and blow someone’s head off if they walk across their property or steal an apple from your tree or steal a tool from your truck...but the fact is you can’t do that. If you do, you’re likely to end up in prison.

Traditional neighborhood watch is unarmed. That's why it was incorrect to call Zimmerman "Neighborhood Watch". Back in the day, they had radios. Nowadays, they have Nest cameras and cell phones, mostly.

Bringing a gun into the situation is a personal choice. I've long held the belief that it is better to have a gun and not need it than to need one and not have it. Bringing that gun to bear to enforce the law?

I'm not doing that unless someone is clearly in danger and there is no other choice. I'm not trying to make a citizen's arrest of a suspected burglar/trespasser who is clearly not an overt threat to anyone.
