Apparently so

quote:

And here’s the upsetting punch line: intelligence seems to make things worse. The scientists gave the students four measures of “cognitive sophistication.” As they report in the paper, all four of the measures showed positive correlations, “indicating that more cognitively sophisticated participants showed larger bias blind spots.”

Being biased is using previous experiences to detect patterns and predict future results.
Intelligence is also about memory and being able to recognize patterns.
So... I'm going to go with, Yes?

If by bias you mean discernment and rational opionions, absolutely.

Absolutely.

They're also more open minded and willing to have their biases proven wrong. At least in my experience.

This explains my radical centrism.

You've got it backwards. They're far more confident in their biases.

I know I've never found anyone who self describes as "moderate" to be particularly intelligent.

Of course I'm already subscribed to the New Yorker, I'm a genteel man with what I like to think is wit.

Definitely truth to that.

I think more intelligent people are less seceptible to propaganda but more likely to be over confident in the positions they do have.

This statement reeks of overconfidence.

You've almost got it. Inttellegent people make exceptions to their biases. So that their biases are 99% in their favor

I haven't seen any studies on self described 'moderates' and IQ scores. But I have seen them on 'moderates' and general knowledge scores. Moderates score much lower than conservatives and liberals.

The conclusion was that moderates are too uninformed to have a political philosophy.

We now know why very smart people go to 3 years of law school to obtain careers with long hours and equivalent pay to non-lawyers: they have huge blind spots when it comes to finances.

I often ask them to outline 3-4 essential tenets of a "moderate" political philosophy, and I've yet to get even an attempt at an answer.

Intelligent people see black and white. They are discerning and make clear judgments about what is true and what is false. They tend to be more sure of their judgments and are less likely to flip and flop with the crowd.
