I don't agree with you on almost anything, but I do on this one.

The 2nd amendment was written to protect the colonists from a tyrannical federal government. The founders envisioned an organized militia (made up of ordinary citizens) who could act as an armed deterrent to an overreaching government. It's clear this is what they meant to anyone who can read English. It was supposed to be a sort of "National Guard" NOT controlled by the Feds (like the state Guards used to be before the Feds took them over). The country is a lot different now than it was in 1776, thanks in part to the Civil War which ended states rights and increased the power of the centralized federal government.

It's also clear that they left the constitution open to amendment (which is why they went through great effort in outlining the amendment process). They knew times would change, technology would change, social norms would change. They wanted any changes to be left up to the people, as the whole idea of America is self-governance above all else.
