The same was true in the American Secession of 1776.

Exactly. Keep a couple weeks stuff in case of a long power loss, etc.

Being prepared isn't paranoia. Being self sufficient isnt "survivalist," its just preparation.

This. If you want to be real basic about it, go buy one of the older (early 90's and before) Boy Scout handbooks. They cover a lot of material and provide diagrams. Very useful.

It used to be a standard American thing.
We had a nationwide organization called Boy Scouts that used to teach this.

I don't know what they teach today.

No one knows for sure I guess. Desperate men do horrific things to survive but we've practically raised our families together and any time shite has hit the fan (hurricanes, ice storms, family emergencies..) we been there for each other. The mind set on this supposed very Christian board is to thump their chest at how independent and prepared they are and frick the rest ...or worse ..actually welcome the carnage.
The reality is those that cooperate, band together and "carry the flame" as Cormac called it in The Road will more likely survive.

I hope we never see a civil war, but we're certainly trending toward one.

Still, who can really say how the factions would all align anyway? The only certainty would be that no one would trust anyone else.

Whoever the "tech needs" are and whoever they side with, they'll be easily and wholly neutralized by a single mass EMP.

I began prepping quite a while back because I finally had the epiphany of exactly how fragile modern society is, and how materialistic and tech-reliant that the overwhelming majority of US citizens have become. Without a power grid, network and devices, most people would quite literally not know how to continue existing.

I suggest to everyone here to at very least have 90 days worth of food for you and your family on hand at all times, and plenty of freedom seeds with the ability to effectively dispense them. Multiple years of long-term storage foods is better, but you'll be surprised how much you can pile up on a small budget for a shorter length of time. The 90 days gives you a good "adjustment window" to be able to self sustain while letting things play out to observe the trends and plan your moves.

Autists definitely won't be hampered by empathy, seeing how they are generally incapable of normal emotions.

Could be an advantage...

Are you fbi and trying to bait people into another fbi entrapment scheme?

In survival, its not going to work that way. The guy next to you will kill you for a bite of meat.

Baws arent going to beat the government, but you can draw back and not let it affect you as much. You can face them down, or you can become so independent and self sufficient that they cant touch you.

Needing less is better than requiring more.

You really don't want a civil war.

Once it erupts the major cities will become meat grinders with the criminals and gangs having the upper hand the first few days. The amount of death and inhuman acts committed will be astronomical.
Those in the suburbs and more rural areas will have time to react, prepare or flee...however, they will not be spared from the horror.

No one wants this...but it looks like it's coming.

We all should be living like this..

Purchasing less, being more self sufficient.

I think when we were kids, most of our vegetables came from gardens. Everyone is a mega consumer today.

Do you think that everyone in the US military would just blindly follow orders to carry out attacks on fellow citizens. Half of the military would be on the other side along with their equipment, or do you not realize this?

I'd upvote ×1000 if I could.

I say this all the time to people who bring up the asinine "one side has all the guns" argument. That's a disingenuous platitude that lulls many people into a false sense of security.

I went round and round with a buddy who says he'll be just fine if society collapses because "I've got an arsenal so I'll just take whatever I want". Couldn't for the life of me convince him that there are well armed and supplied people who are far more prepared than him, who will be highly organized and wipe him out before he even knows what hit him. You're a good shot when deer hunting? Cool. You could pick off a few stragglers trying to cross your fence from 500 yards away with your .300 mag. Congratulations. Now, what do you do when you're struggling to see in the dark and a pair of moderately trained raiders creep right up on you in the pitch black because they have NVGs, and quietly slit your throat before they move inside to do the same to your family.

Having a relatively isolated home on a little piece of land and a bunch of guns isn't enough. You better have an unfaltering vigilance and a heightened sense of awareness. If you have something, and shite hits the fan, you can rest assured that someone else out there wants to take whatever you have, and they're willing to kill you and find out later if you actually have anything or not. The longer you survive, the bigger the target on you will be, because people will figure out you have things that are sustaining you.

There are studies performed by/with scientific predictive models, which estimate that somewhere between 65-75% of the population of the US would be dead within 12 months of a societal collapse caused by a global EMP event, not even getting into if it were caused by nuclear munitions. A civil war, combined with a EMP/irreparable grid failure, would actually be worse with an explosion of homicide never before seen in modern history.

For anyone who can survive the first year, there will be plenty of resources all about, and not much of a population left to claim them. But that first year would be hell on earth.

I think we all having differing thoughts as far as what we are preparing for and what is likely or possible to occur. A situation occurring where my neighbors and I (even ones I havent known for over a decade and whos kids arent best friend's with mine) are going to try to kill each other for food is not really on my radar. Even in that situation I would hope that I could maintain my desire to carry the flame of civilization....but I've never been on the verge of death from starvation.

So Im not some gonna uproot my family, sell all my possessions and move to the back country to guard against that kind of scenario. That would likely involve an extinction level event that we would not survive anyway. Something that would cause major national food shortages and energy loss I think is entirely possible and something everyone should think about and have some sort of plan. Considering the skills, needs, gear, supplies of neighbors that live close and coordinating with them I think is important part of that plan. That just my take but its certainly been beneficial when we've gone weeks without power.

Roger, being broke and having to live in a van down by the river isn't a choice pal. Quit trying to spin your misfortune into a manly endeavor, and at the same time presume to know how other people live. We only know of your misfortune bc you have told us all about it.
