That’s what the smaller vessels were doing yesterday.
No changes.
They gave up sometime yesterday afternoon on putting out this thing.

Its the same boat that was on fire yesterday, they still haven't been able to put it out.

Not a good situation for a ship that is supposed to be able to survive combat.

Yes. They’re saying they could be fighting the fire for several days.

Ship board fire fighting is a chore. Everyone that embarks on a ship has to have some rudimentary fire fighting training. I have embarked on LSDs, LHDs, LSDs and one ancient LST.

The Spirit of John McCain. His curse still hangs around Air Craft Carriers.

I'm surprised there is no way to cut off oxygen by sealing the ship, mechanically or with some type of foam.

According to Fox News yesterday, caught a quick glimpse and they were told it was due to a construction accident (welder's cutting torch).

Given it was built back in the 90's it probably doesn't have many parts (if any) from China in it.

Holy shite, how the hell does that happen?

Want to know the truth? From someone who has worked doing repair on Navy Ships?
They hire a bunch a punks and thugs and lazy women for welders helpers and firewatch. They are the ones who are supposed to cover up flammable materials and hoses and wiring, etc. with fire blankets, and keep an eye out for sparks and fires when the welders are working. All they really do, is sit on a bucket and play on their phones or sleep. Many of the women are off selling BJs in some hiding place. Good old affirmative action at work.

None of which are likely still on the ship when it comes to harbor. At least that's the way it works for full carriers, all of their planes are flown off before reaching dock.

This one had been in for maintenance for a while and had no planes or armaments on board.

Full fuel tanks are safer than empty ones. It's a matter of fuel/oxygen ratio.
In a situation like that one, I suppose when the fuel is getting heated up, it's the fumes that become the problem.

Ha..my first time underway we traversed the Indian Ocean on an LST going from Japan to Africa (Marine passenger, not crew). I puked for three days. Subsequent floats were on LHDs and and LPDs...thank god. Flat bottoms suck...on girls and ships.

It carries F35's and helo's while being about as big as a WWII carrier. And it has a flat top.

Close enough for people that are not military geeks.

Hell, today's "destroyers" are larger than a WWII heavy cruiser.

Not even close.

Burke Class Destroyer, Flight III: 9500 tons displacement

WWII Baltimore Class Heavy Cruiser: 17000 tons displacement
