Just remember what I was doing. I was in the field as a HVAC technician and I stoped at a parts house to get more materials for a 40 ton split system that I was piping for a local hospital in Mobile. It was for the cancer center and I was in the basement so not great signal for our southern linc two way radios, so I was pretty obvious. I did hear that the first plane had hit and everyone thought it was just an amateur pilot in a small plane, had no idea about the second plane and the pentagon and Pennsylvania crash until lunch time and was just completely flabbergasted. My boss was working downtown Mobile at the new FBI building that was being finished and we all were just shocked.

Oh and i flew back to see my family 1 month late out of San Jose and the lady in front of me was putting her purse on the conveyor and her pepper spray canister went off. Everyone was severely coughing and i hit the ground covering my face to breath.
They still had Military with Machine guns guarding security passthrough and they were screaming and and coming from everywhere.
The Airport was announcing possible terrorist event shelter in place over speakers. None of us were allowed to move until they figured out what happened. I can remember the people screaming. And you don't ever want to be in pepper spray that close. Had to be me get in line behind her.
I think they did arrest her. Never heard what happenned to her.

Not near NY but I worked night shift 9/10 and 9/11. My mom called to wake us up and tell us.
I drove past IAH airport every day on 59. Was eerie to see NOTHING in the sky while traffic crawled on 59. Planes always fly over you as the runways are perpendicular to the highway.

My cousin’s husband lost his father who worked for Carr Futures on the 92nd floor of the North Tower. None of his coworkers made it out.

I’m aware that everyone has their own opinions about what happened and I don’t want to get off into a conspiracy discussion.
I posted this a few years back. It's my experience deploying to the Pentagon after the attacks. We were there for about 10 days.
First off, I’m a local to the BR area, as I graduated from Zachary High in the early 90’s. I’ve worked in Technical Rescue for my entire career specializing in collapsed buildings, collapsed excavations and confined spaces. When 9/11 happened, I was living in ABQ, New Mexico and was a member of NMTF-1 Urban Search and Rescue. We were deployed to the Pentagon on the afternoon of the attacks.
We reached the site late (after extensive security checks) on the night of the 11th and began setting up our equipment.
That night when we took a break some of us sat on light poles that the plane had knocked over.
That night one of our first priorities was to begin filling in a large hole that was located about 50 - 60 feet in front of the damage you all saw on tv. The plane had struck the ground fairly hard there and lost a lot of its momentum.
If you look at an aerial photo of the Pentagon, you’ll see that building is 5 independent buildings with a large outdoor “corridor” between them.
The plane went through the first three buildings. The inside wall of the third building had large hole in it that was made by plane’s front landing gear. If you were inside the third building and walked through the hole (which I did many times) you came out into the corridor that is between third and fourth buildings. The front landing gear damaged the fourth building’s outer wall but did not penetrate it.
Almost all of the plane seats and passengers were piled up just to the right of the hole (if you were standing inside the third building). I didn’t see a single seat or passenger from this area that was wholly intact. It was a terrible scene especially since there was a group of young kids on the plane.
To me the plane seems to have turned towards the left as it went through the building because on the 3rd day our group found the “pilot’s” remains.
The Captains Chair with the harness style seat belt had protected him more than the passengers. He was still strapped into the chair, which was laid over on its right side and nestled up next to a concrete column. He was only missing the lower part of his right leg and his right arm.
There was a slurry type mixture of water from the fire trucks and jet fuel everywhere. We had to keep charged fire suppression lines everywhere because we kept accidentally lighting it on fire.
My main memory though is of being terrified while in inside the building and listening to the upper floors creek and moan. It sounded like it wanted to all come down at any moment.
Sorry for the morbid details but sometimes you need those.

The hospital my aunt was in had a nurse who had a sister on the plane that was taken back by the passengers. We're were all listening to updates from the woman, until they touched down.
A couple of days later my GF at the time told me there was a woman at her work that was cheering for what happened. And pissing everybody off at her work.
I met her after work and asked her to point out the woman's car. She did.
3 days later me and crew went to my gf's work. When we left that car had no windows, windshields, tires, battery, or distributor wires.

Not my story but two girls I worked with were on a plane over the Atlantic returning from vacation in England. Pilot came on the intercom and informed the passengers that something had happened and US airspace was closed. It appeared that the US was under attack. He also informed the passengers that if there was a hijack attempt to take em out. They were diverted to Gander Newfoundland.

As I've gotten older, I tend to get more emotional.
Back then, not so much.
As I stood at a car rental counter, watching their TV, I remember sobbing. Not understanding why people were jumping, it looked like something out of a horror film.
Michael Berry, the radio host has been running story after story of the heroism that day. If you can, you should catch his show. I'm certain you know them all, I did not.
Ordinary men, doing the extraordinary.
Excerpt:
1 - Frank De Martini and Pablo Ortiz.
They were civilian Port Authority employees who used a crowbar and flashlights to save an estimated 50 to 77 people trapped inside the World Trade Center's North Tower on September 11, 2001. Instead of escaping downward to safety, De Martini and Ortiz grabbed tools—including a crowbar—and climbed up toward the danger.
Joined by their colleagues Pete Negron and Carlos da Costa, they went from floor to floor. On the 89th floor, they found a large group of office workers completely blocked by a collapsed doorframe. Ortiz used his crowbar to force the frame open, clearing a path to the only surviving staircase.
Every time they cleared a floor and directed a group of survivors toward the stairs, De Martini and Ortiz chose to stay behind and climb higher to search for more people. Their ultimate sacrifice: They were still working on the upper floors, trying to free more trapped occupants, when the North Tower collapsed at 10:28 a.m.. Neither man survived.
2-A Staff Sgt. David W. Karnes
The Story: Karnes was working as a CPA at Deloitte & Touche in Connecticut when the planes hit. He told his colleagues, "We're at war," left his office, and immediately went to a local barbershop to get a "good Marine Corps squared-off haircut". He drove home, put on his starched Marine fatigues, and drove to Manhattan at 120 mph. He bypassed barricades because of his uniform and haircut, entered the dangerous debris pile, and met Sgt. Jason Thomas. After helping rescue the officers, Karnes stayed for nine days to help and eventually re-enlisted to serve two tours in Iraq. He was portrayed by Michael Shannon in the 2006 Oliver Stone film World Trade Center.

Thomas had been out of active duty for about a year and was dropping his daughter off at his mother's house when he heard the news. He grabbed his Marine uniform from the trunk of his car, put it on, and sped toward Ground Zero.

A friend while we were at LSU was a pilot for Delta on 9/11. He was in the air when all flights were ordered to land.
He apparently was trying to fly to a larger airport farther along his route. He was deemed to be taking too long to land. He was soon bracketed by two fighter jets which were scrambled to “encourage” him to land immediately at a much smaller regional airport.
It scared the mess out of him as the jets were close enough for him to see the pilots’ faces.

I was in my senior year of high school. I remember getting ready that morning and my mom called me in to look at the TV after the first plane. I didn’t know how big those buildings were and thought maybe it was a business jet, some freak accident. Then the second plane came in.
We had a sub in first period who tried to have a normal class and we told him to frick off while we watched the news.
I worked on the air base golf course through high school and I worked that day. Never had seen threatcon Delta and 100% ID check. The gate was two lanes but they cut it down to one and you had to zig zag through barriers that day, and there was a humvee parked 100 or so yards inside the gate with a .50 mounted on top that was manned, I remember seeing the belt of ammo.

As a young dumb, full of Cum Airman, we had a 9/11 memorial at Tinker AFB (home of the AWACS).
While everyone else was taking part in the big memorial pony show, the ABMs were all over to the side, not really participating, and looking pissed off to even be there.
This was about 10-12 yrs after the event, so many officers were in-service in 01 and still on active duty. Someone went up to one of them after the ceremony and asked what was up. One of the younger ABMs said: a couple of them were in the air that day or knew guys on duty and saw everything that was about to happen and were told it was all a surprise exercise...and dont worry, nothing was going to happen.
Needless to say, they weren't exactly fans of the ceremony.
That's my 911 story.

Our Irish club here in B.R. had been friends with 2 New Yorkers Irish bagpipers who always came down for the St, Patrick's Day party & parade. They had been in Tower II, helping people get out. They eventually got out just before the Tower went down. The last time they came down was 4 years ago, or 21 years post crashes. They both said that every time a plane passed any way close to them, they lost it, Shakes, trembling, close to blacking out.
