so our less than average paid teachers would stop producing less than average students
The teachers, as subpar as they may be are not producing less than average students. The students' families and their lack of emphasis on education causes the below average performance. Providing LA teachers well above average salaries won't do a thing. Catholic school teachers are paid less than LA public school teachers and the schools produce above average students.

Actually that's part of the problem. It's such a shite job, people just find another job.

cost of living Louisiana ranks 18th cheapest

Which lines up with my point. Below average (in a good way), but not all that much.

When the listings of "Worst" this or that, we typically end up in the Top 3/5 with the usual suspects, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, etc. Therefore, we should be way down there in the Bottom 5/8 (at least) in cost of living. But we aren't.

Rampant corruption and a tax/spend government mindset (regardless of party) have costs to bear.

Is that be because our "cost of living" is less than the national average?

I agree! You’d think he raised my taxes, threatened LSU football, or promotes an anti business stance that will drive my children from the state to get a real job!

Wait. What? He has?!

Amen brother. Send Governor Honor Code back to his law practice where his anti-business bent only affects those companies he’s suing, not all of them.

Yes. It's relative. You can't just look at the stat in a vacuum. The COL in Louisiana is less than about 2/3rds of the country. Thus, $50k in Louisiana goes farther than $50k in another locale. And that's not just limited to teachers. Even traditionally high paying professions pay less (on average) in LA than they do in say, the Bay area, Chicago, etc.

this is a nice sentiment but in the real world, certain types of teachers are untouchable. there are security videos of teachers doing straight up crazy things and nothing happened to them other than just being assigned to a different school. the schools don't do anything because they would be susceptible to a specific type of litigation. the raise is actually rewarding bad behavior

Don't get all worked up about it. He is a one termer and there are not enough teachers out there to change that.

there's some truth to this. good teachers who aren't fortunate enough to land in ap subjects don't last as long. they get sick of dealing with the bad students who are enabled by the other teachers i was speaking of earlier - the ones who do/allow bad behavior and don't get punished because of certain demographic trends in our society.

i'm not at all against raises for teachers. but this particular one is window dressing until the underlying societal problems are addressed.

If they would fix the pension problem, salaries could be addressed. We are below the southern average in salary, but above the southern average in benefits.

Somehow the benefits part of the equation just gets left out...

Teachers in Mississippi don't get paid maternity leave. Have a friend who's wife gave birth early because of complications and it turned out it was a blessing because she delivered during Christmas Break and she wasn't going to have to use take a pay cut for the time out.

The way we address education from a human resources stand point is embarrassing as a country. We need to stop worrying about the students and start caring more about the workforce. All other problems will take care of themselves.

The MAIN reason they leave is over regulation of their class rooms by our extremely numerous and unnecessary “administrators” in our school systems, idiotic implementation of standards (English teachers judging math teachers on classroom instruction techniques and vice versa), and the lack of ability to discipline problem/disruptive children. Not due to pay

Yep. Terrible teachers are way overpaid and great teachers are way underpaid.

This across the board raise just perpetuates that system.

Where do 4 months come into play? Most teachers work until the end of May and are required to come back at the beginning of August for professional development. There is also 2 weeks off during the winter. During both summer and winter breaks, though, most teachers are still doing at least a moderate amount of prep work for the semester.

Biggest problem with teachers is assholes like you don't respect them and believe little Johnny when he says he didn't do anything in class and the teacher picked on him. Do a better job at home and good teachers will be willing to stick it out. The entitled generation started with the parents, not the kids.

I am one of those “numerous and unnecessary” administrators (actually I’m the only assistant principal in the school and I actually agree with this statement.
