Pedro Gonzalez: If anything, America has an under-incarceration problem

quote:

Most of what Americans have been told about mass incarceration is untrue, or takes half-truths and tortures them into whole lies.

quote:

Twenty percent of convicted murderers, and nearly 60 percent of those convicted for rape or sexual assault, serve less than five years of their sentences.

quote:

In Illinois, a study found that of those arrested for homicides or shootings in Chicago in 2015 and 2016, about ’90 percent had at least one prior arrest, approximately 50 percent had a prior arrest for a violent crime specifically, and almost 40 percent had a prior gun arrest.’ Of this number, nearly 36 percent were ‘on parole or probation’ at the time of the alleged crime.

For years I've said we need more prisons, not fewer. How many times do we hear of some heinous crime which was committed by someone with a lengthy RAP sheet?

Remember when their excuse was “we’re overpopulated?” Yea they’ve just dropped that entire sham now and calling for ending prisons altogether. Same old same old

Correct

If all Democrats were incarcerated, not only the US but the entire world, would be a better place!

No one has issues with violent offenders being in jail with long sentences and little possibility of parole.

Start letting out the drug users and jaywalkers and make more room for the rapists, bankers, and politicians.

Legalize all drugs.

Dismantle the punitive administrative state at all levels - municipal, state, and federal.

Abolish private prisons.

Put in place a civilian review board, pulled from the state jury pool, to audit the actions of state prosecutors in conjunction with DOJ envoys.

I will respectfully disagree.

We incarcerate just fine

I promise you if we put more of them in the ground, there’d be less repeat offenders & crime would go down.

There’s very little deterrent to being a criminal.

Let's hope Chicago isn't the baseline to which we compare the rest of the country. That joint's a bit of an outlier in a reeaal bad way.

Watch out. The pro weed lobby will be here to tell you how wrong you are... Nevermind the fact that drug dealers are more likely to involved in violent crimes than the average criminal.

Well, we incarcerate more people per capita than any other nation, so this is completely false.

How does this disprove the OP? Are there not violent felons on the street committing crimes everyday?

I'd believe it if we had harsher punishments.

It's not just about the people sitting in prison, it's about allocating resources properly in law enforcement and prosecution. Law enforcement agencies and those in prosecutor's offices around the country are as concerned with revenue raising as they are with solving and stopping violent crimes. A crackhead killing or raping someone doesn't raise revenue. Seizing assets from a mid-level drug dealer or a white collar criminal does.

The amount of people who are in prison solely for marijuana possession (or even trafficking) is absolutely infinitesimal - unless they were sentenced decades ago. Nearly all of them plead to that charge in exchange for others being dropped.
