Yeah, the last time I went to one of those dollar-store chains, I remember seeing some Halloween candy for sale, and looking over the package, noting it was made in China. This was several years back, around the time I'd heard some of these stores were selling made-in-China pet food that was tainted with some plastic or chemical substance, which was sickening and killing dogs and/or cats. Also, the customers there that day all looked like hollow-eyed meth-heads. I never went back to the store, and haven't been in one of those dollar stores since.

Quite a change from the old country-store and the adjacent feed store that had been located at that spot, where the farmers and families would be stocking up. Always stopped there to get a 12-ounce bottle of RC Cola, and chat the with the old gent that ran the place. Real nice guy. A World War 2 veteran, as I recall. Remember chatting with him about old radio shows and the big bands. He talked about attending the Hollywood Canteen during the war.

But nope, it's now all zombified meth-heads, using welfare checks to buy standardized corporate product in a rat-trap steel shed building. Progress!

Just bought a skid steer and mini ex OP.

Clearing some property and mulching pine trees.

Probably squished lots of rodents and reptiles by now.

Does anyone remember the story 60 Minutes did c. 1988-9 when WalMart started spreading like wildfire? Much of it was filmed in a town near BR (Donaldsonville, IIRC).

It examined how WM was driving all other retailers out of business. I specifically recall one local merchant saying how before WM there were 4 or 5 places to buy a bicycle, but now there was only WM.

Then, a crisis. Now, the status quo we accept with thinking.

I suppose in 30 years a DG for every small town will be the norm we don't think about.

Then start buying land and preserve it OR grow up and become an adult.

What was clear cut to build the residence you live in?

Q: What’s the difference between a developer and an environmentalist?

A: The environmentalist already has his waterfront property.

How many children do you have? If more than 2, then you are part of the problem. More people equals need for more stores.

Is it true that they have a plan to build stores up to the point where you will never be within more than like 5 miles of one, no matter where you are in the country?

I have a little inside info on this. Dollar General's former CEO is now CEO of Family Dollar / Dollar Tree (they are one company). He is using the same strategy that he used at Dollar General, which is to put one within 5 miles of every person in their market areas, which is pretty much everywhere. They built 250 new stores in 2022, and are doubling that in 2023. They are also renovating 1500 stores a year, which basically means painting, putting in new cash wraps and registers, new hanging and wall fixtures, moving gondolas (shelving) for better merchandising, and moving stock sections to different parts of the building, to confuse customers and make them have to search for items and hopefully impulse buy more shite from China. Their problem is that they don't pay shite to their store employees, so they scrape the bottom of the barrel for help. Dollar General is also continuing with this same strategy, so yes, we will all be sick of seeing dollar stores there'll be so many.

The reality is there are pros and cons to both capitalism and socialism. Too much and too little.

Plenty of places for animals to move. I have a pear tree on my property and often see a herd of deer having pears for breakfast.
