Just chipping away at the history of this country to eventually absorb it and consider this period as “just a phase”

In which case I give you Braxton Bragg. He always seemed to get his arse kicked in which ever battle he was in.

Longstreet was competent and successful
Lee - obviously
John Bell Hood - good general
Beauregard - yep
Benning - OK
JEB Stewart - excellent cavalry officer
AP Hill - good general
And of course, Stonewall Jackson, maybe the most successful Southern General...along with Forrest.

.....but Bragg....think of him as the Confederate version of the Washington Generals in the Civil War.

Wny Southern politicians wanted to name a base after this loser still confounds me..." Hey you are facing Bragg"

Unionn Commander: "So you're saying I'm guaranteed victory?"

I'm not for changing base names....I'm just for not naming bases for guys who show up and get their asses kicked.

Missing the point entirely. The federal army named these bases in the South after locals from the area or with a direct tie to the location (Hood and his Texans for example) in an attempt to reconcile and bind up the nation's wounds with what was the great compromise: Southerners admit that the Union being preserved was probably for the best and Northerners admit that the South had a point and fought long and hard to make it.

That compromise is clearly shot to pieces by vengeful fanatics who are hell bent on opening up this awful can of works again.

If that were true, we'd have a Black History Minute. Not a month.

Certainly the good people of North Carolina could find a better Confederate from their state than Braxton Bragg.

Of course the Marine base is named after a Cajun....not from Civil War.

Freedom lost when the Tyrant Lincoln won. We are all losers today because of it.

The name has nothing to do with the sacrifice and camaraderie that happened there.

I watched a video of a Civil War reunion decades after the war and that included both confederate and union soldiers.

You gonna call them traitors?

Bragg was one of the Union's best assets so it makes sense to keep him.

They were clearly traitors, but whether they were swine depends upon which side you were on.

Regardless, the UK does not have statues of them everywhere, or name their forts after them.

I guess its safe to say you don't understand how Lincoln, like Madison, believed in the need for a central government to rule over the states.

Lincoln did not care whatsoever about slaves. None. It was a propaganda drive to enlist some of the abolitionists.

Lincoln cared about POWER

I remember reading that Frederick Douglas wanted the war to be about slavery to be in the papers

But Lincoln told him that the public wouldn't buy into it.

Lincoln wanted to preserve the union if it meant blood being shed. That was what mattered to him.
