Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced Monday that $98.5 million in grant funding is going to local police departments to hire additional officers.

Sessions said 80 percent of the 179 law enforcement agencies getting awards through the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services COPS Hiring Program have agreed to cooperate with federal immigration authorities in their detention facilities. “

Cities and states that cooperate with federal law enforcement make all of us safer by helping remove dangerous criminals from our communities,” he said in a statement. He added that he applauds their commitment to the rule of law and to ending violent crime, including from illegal immigration.

“I continue to encourage every jurisdiction in America to collaborate with federal law enforcement and help us make this country safer,” he said. The funding, the Justice Department said, will allow the local agencies to hire 802 additional full-time law enforcement officers.

It might be a good time to invest in some donut shops.

Just kidding, this is a good thing. Rewards the cities and states that follow the rules, and puts more cops on the streets so maybe we can reverse the 3 year trend of rising violent crime.

Police training and maybe some educational requirements would go further with police I think.

Excellent! CA, some jurisdictions in MD and elsewhere need not apply! Under this AG, actions DO have consequences!

Good guy Session (in this instance)

Problematic citizens need training and education into understanding the words "respect" & "compliance".

Hopefully none of that goes to the Fairfax, Prince William, or Arlington County Police Departments or Virginia Staties.

They have enough revenue collectors—erm I mean troopers to line 80 miles of interstate with regular and undercover traffic cops on the I-66 and I-95 every goddamned morning and afternoon.

802 cops at an average salary of 50k a year is only 40 million dollars.

Where's all that money going? I know cops don't make 6 figures

We don’t need more cops we need better trained and better vetting in the hiring process.

Check our the average salaries of some of the big city PDs. Lots of cops make six figures.

Salary, employment taxes, retirement, healthcare, etc. An employee that makes $60K cost the company (or police department) more than $60K.

Requires training in advanced “bribe-taking” and hobknobbing with your Mafia buddies from “the old neighborhood” on the weekend.

I'd rather see that 98 million going into building more prisons.

More government, more sending people to jail for stupid crimes, and more brutality. This is terrifying.
