New York City’s fast-food industry has served as a laboratory for the nation’s labor movement for the last several years.
Its workers were the first to stage rallies demanding a minimum wage of $15 an hour. Then, they pressed for changes in the way national restaurant chains set their work schedules.
Now, they are asking the City Council to shield them from being fired without a valid reason. That protection, the sort of job security that unions usually bargain for, would be a first for a city to provide to workers in a specific industry, labor law experts said.
Princess Wright, 22, said she was fired from her job at a McDonald’s in Brooklyn for missing a shift.

If they just paid her $30 an hour, she wouldn’t have missed!

Why not just cut her hours forcing her to look elsewhere for a job?

The only possible solution is $20 minimum wage.

sorry princess, er, I mean Princess, get your arse to work on time
I would imagine a fast food place is damned near unmanageable as it is, only moreso if you have to keep people who very showing up as optional.

I doubt it was one shift

She failed to show up for work. She wasn’t fired. She quit
Folks at that economic level strangely think that showing up for a shift is optional. You aren’t doing them any favors allowing them to get away with that. They need to learn responsibility

I didn't schedule time off, I didn't call in sick, I simple didn't show up for my shift. Who the fk does my employer think they are to fire me??? We need job security!
In cali, once min wage was $15, they wanted less hours lol
Why should I work same hours if I can work half the time and keep sane pay??
More money means less welfare, F that

They are probably having to run leaner because of the increase in the minimum wage. Having a worker miss a shift probably is a huge hit to the business.

shite, the shake machine been missing shifts since 1972. He’s still there...

Failing to inform your superior that you won't be showing up for your shift is typically job abandonment.
I bet that's why she was fired.

Perhaps she needs a dictionary to look up the word valid

To whom much is given, much is expected.

This is interesting unintended consequence. Higher pay means more demand for the job, therefore more responsibilities for current employees that weren’t there before

Yep, a lot more people are competing for limited higher paying jobs, low-quality shift-skipping people gonna get replaced with the quickness.
Posted on 2/16/19 at 10:21 am to cokebottleag
They will just replace them with Kiosks. No reason to need these morons when we can self check.
Posted on 2/16/19 at 10:21 am to cokebottleag
Don’t worry Princess, help is coming
Posted on 2/16/19 at 10:21 am to cokebottleag
Am I supposed to feel sympathy for people who don't show up for work?
