I watched the whole thing unfold in real time. I didn't see anything but a peaceful protest. In stark contrast to leftwing protestors who burned major American cities only a few months earlier. So what am I missing? Maybe if all the video of Jan 6 was made available it would explain a few things.

They had 3 fricken years to bring a case to court.
I guess there is no statue of limitations on charges of insurrection.
It is almost like they waited until this year to prosecute to have show trials and remind folks what we do to people that disagree with the people in charge.

The police waved "rioters" through and escorted them into the building. It was a riot by unarmed sightseeers who had plane tickets home for the next day. It was not a coup, sedition, nor an insurrection. It was a protest that got out of hand, with a little help from the "Fed-surrectionists".

Lot of people arrested and put in prison who were escorted through the capitol by police, and stayed between the red ropes like they were in a museum.
There are people in prison who weren’t even physically present that day.
Yet the person caught on video and tracked home who put a “bomb” by a bench (a “bomb” that oddly resembles a FBI training aid) is still walking free.
I think it’s you who doesn’t have a “basic understanding” of much that’s going on.
