I wonder how much of that ethanol production is for whiskey

Ethanol has no business being in our fuel supply.
No food stuff should be made into fuel.

I don't disagree, and I grew up on a farm. But when it was just about food, I could go along with it, because food security is national security.
But making fuel out of food, when we have plenty of energy resources is retarded.

Corn should never be used as the rough on a golf course. When you hit your shot 4 rows into the tall field it's easy to find your ball but impossible to hit it out.

That is because the farmers are part owners of the ethanol plants and the only segment of the corn market actually profitable to farm.
The US once controlled the export grain market with 80% globally. Reagan pretty much stopped that when he cut US purchase of Rice as a giveaway crop. USAID sacks of rice, wheat bulgar used to be common at the Port of Lake Charles with at least two ships loading at the same time.
A stupid farmer is one who isn't an LLC or more.
Brazil's farms are gigantic. 300,000 acres for one owners not a big deal.
The US has been cut out of markets due lack of free to other nations paid for by taxoayers.
If you are shocked, it is because all you know is the cry baby hype and don't understand that post WWII the government kept small farms in business by making demand and prices higher.

The kicker for me is that it is an inferior product. The ethanol folks claim better efficiency and some fringe benefits to ethanol gas on the highway such as exhaust standards but it has never been my experience that it run better or that it is better for your vehicle in any way over non ethanol. And its no secret that it is a disaster for small engines and outboards.
Its cheaper due to government subsidies to produce it. So the government is subsidizing an inferior product for reasons that are proving to be less and less meaningful.

About 40% of all corn production in US is devoted to ethanol
The breakdown is revealing:
40% ethanol
40% animal feed
19.1% human food products
0.9% Stacy Abrams

It is used as an oxygenator to replace less expensive MTBE.
It is cheaper than gasoline so lowers the overall cost per gallon
The subsidies are state subsidies which varies by state, Regardless of the name on the sign, a plant has to be 51% owned by local farmers in a coop.
The Federal subsidies are to the fuel blender.
The Federal subsidies are to the fuel blender, not the ethanol producer or farmer.
