How many people are injured in car crashes every year?

There are about 6,420,000 auto accidents in the United States each year. The financial cost of these crashes is more than 230 Billion dollars. 2.9 million people were injured and 42,636 people killed. About 115 people die every day in vehicle crashes in the United States -- one death every 13 minutes.
When there's a movement to outlaw automobiles, then we discuss gun bans.

this is the dumbest argument by pro gun folks. Guns were developed to kill, cars were developed for transporation

That's actually a pretty damn scary high number

I don't think people truly grasp how dangerous driving is. When you get into a car, you are stepping into something that is far more dangerous than an airplane, a train, a surgery, etc

I don't believe more gun control will solve the problem, but your analogy is pretty weak. First of all cars are an essential part of the average citizen's existence in modern society and without cars our current societal model would collapse. The same cannot be said for gun ownership.

Second, essentially all vehicular deaths are unintentional, whereas only about 15% of gun deaths are.

That all depends on where you live.

I posted this just now in another thread, but it applies here too so I'm copying and pasting...

This is a dumb strawman argument. If you're ever in a legitimate debate on these issues outside of an echo chamber, please don't pull this out.

Here's some steps I would take steps to prevent vehicle deaths. Let me know if any of these sound familiar.

First off, I'd make driving drunk illegal.
-I'd also probably make everyone get some kind of license before letting them operate a car.
-I'd probably make people get insurance to cover the damage that they might cause to other people.
-I'd also want to make sure their car operated right and was safe for the road, so I'd want them to get it inspected once a year so.
-Also, I would want to keep track of the cars someone owns, so I could make sure they're following these other restrictions, so I'd probably want them to register their car.
-Finally, because I know that using cars to their max capacity can be extremely hazardous, I'd want some kind of law limiting the speed someone can travel in their car.

Hm...please don't make any argument comparing car laws and gun laws. The facts are that we as a society realized a long time ago that cars are inherently dangerous, but we also realized that they're an integral part of our lives. So we decided to put a ton of laws and regulations on them to try and make them safer. A lot of those laws and regulations have worked and saved many many lives.

Not really

When you look at risk per unit of time, cars are extremely safe. Think about how much time you spend in a car vs an airplane or in surgery in your life. The average person will drive more in one year than they will fly in their entire lives. And of course the risk per unit time of major surgery is exponentially higher.

Then there's the fact that only a very small minority of car accidents are deadly, whereas an airplane crash is nearly universally fatal.

We do have to take tests periodically and have insurance to drive a car. If we kill or injure someone with the car we get the shite sued out of us. Do you want gun owners to have the same? Periodic tests to see if you are competent to own a gun and also have insurance so if anyone gets injured or killed by said gun?

Why? Are guns and cars not both tools? Which tool kills more people each year? Cars or guns?

See my post above to understand why this is a terrible comparison.

Funnily enough, this is coming (at least person drivership of cars) when AV really takes hold.

There is. Computer control will eliminate drunk driving.
