Abdul El-Sayed Killed Over a Quarter of the Dogs Put Down in the Entire County in 2015

Abdul El-Sayed wants to be Michigan’s next U.S. senator. The progressive darling just clawed his way through a bitter Democratic primary. Now the record he once bragged about is staring voters in the face. And it stinks of blood and feces.

From 2015 to 2017, El-Sayed ran the Detroit Health Department. That put him in charge of the city’s Animal Care and Control operation during some of its ugliest years. According to records obtained by the Daily Mail, nearly 4,680 dogs and cats were euthanized while he held that post.

In 2015 alone, the shelter killed 1,988 dogs and 272 cats. That was more than a quarter of every dog put down in the entire county that year. The live-release rate sat at a miserable 20 percent. Four out of five animals that walked through those doors never walked out.

A former animal control officer named Brittany Roberts called the place a “dog slaughterhouse.” She filed a whistleblower lawsuit describing cages coated in feces, urine backed up through clogged drains, rats and roaches, sick animals left without care, and dogs routinely killed without even being scanned for microchips.

She said she was fired for speaking up. The city settled with her for $63,000 in 2016.

Photos she provided showed dogs lying in their own blood, vomit, and waste. One animal was left for dead after being hit by a car. Roberts later found it still alive, eyes rolling back. Staff used a wheelbarrow to haul the bodies to the freezer.
